Hi,

They were bought directly from Krupesh Patel of Electra Automobiles. I shudder to think what would have happened had I been on expressway with family.

He is replacing only the broken spring. I will be getting the other spring checked before reinstalling both.

Lucky Viper I will say. This is the first time I have seen or heard of such a problem on a non rally spec car.
Thank God it was not on the move when it snapped.

My doubt : What material are these springs made of ? I am sure its not usual Mild Steel.

In mild steel, this happens mostly in case of a manufacturing defect and sometimes, due to fatigue failure.

Actually it, happened on our mid-90s TATA Estate front.

Viper, since its a Macpherson strut, the damper is still connected from body to wheel even though the spring breaks. It will collapse and sit on the jounce bumper. Its not as disastrous as for example breaking a steering tie rod or ball joint at high speed.

Coil springs need a special steel alloy called 'spring steel' . Regular cheap grade MS will not have the kind of fatigue performance. What make is the spring. Chinese?

You ARE lucky! I am really glad you were not on the road! I second the above opinion! I wonder if they were of "Indian" origin? Unless your mechanics were having "fun" with the vehicle when you are not around?

The most probable cause is that the spring was an "open toe " type,(ie did not finish with a closed coil at each end).

Chances are that the fracture was three-quarters of a turn from the open toe - the exact position of the stress concentration that occurs if a spring does not finish with a closed coil. Apparently all such springs are made with open ends these days - and they all fracture in the same place. Although it might seem as though an open toe gives a greater active length, hence a reduced working length, owing to the stress concentration caused by the open toe, the reverse is always the case.

Just got the replacement Pedders spring on Saturday evening. Will go and get it refitted today. Just hope that nothing goes wrong with them again.

Am pretty shocked to see this. Never heard of a spring letting go like this. And I have additional cause for concern, since I use the same springs on my car!

Jiggy bhai - One suggestion, if you're not using the stock ECU, I suggest moving the RD ECU to that position. Reason being, last Sunday, water entered my car when she was standing in a heavy downpour & passing cars probably raised the water height to that of the door sill & the entire left side floor was wet to the point where you have your RD ECU kept right now.

Surely, you don't wanna take that risk.

Touching the VTEC activation speculation, Viper I think the ecu Karthik initially gave you did not have a VTEC controller, meaning which, you cannot change your VTEC activation point, thats it. It doesnt mean that the VTEC isnt kicking at all!!! Your VTEC point will be your original VTEC point set by the company, where it wouldve functioned normally.

You "cant" clock on dyno what you have on the primary lobes alone!!!
