Actually mothb@lls made in our country do work as octane booster but they form varnish inside the engine pretty quick.

But just keeping them near air filter, do they actually affect anything?

Probably not. I was talking about adding them to petrol.

Honestly, if I was told 'adding it to petrol', I would not comment as I know nothing about chemical reactions that would take place. But keeping near air filter, well, need not say more.

It sounds like a crazy idea, but (in theory) if the idea is to get napthalene vapour into the cylinder along with the intake charge, how does it make a difference whether it's added to the petrol or sucked in with air?

If its kept near air filter, I dont think the napthalene vapour and air will be mixed proportionately at all times right? I'm saying this assuming that it actually does 'increase octane of petrol'.

Wanted to know about this and was wondering if any of you could help enlist what modifications are included in:

Stage One
Stage Two
Stage Three

I know that the segregation is not definite, and variations depend on tuners, forums or countries. But keeping the Indian perspective in mind, how would one segregate?

Well as you said, these various stages depend on tuners mostly. Though broadly you can classify the following as:

Stage 1 : Air filter, headers & exhaust.

Stage 2 : Port/polish, increase compression, change to street cams, ECU revv limiter removal, suspension mods, street clutch.

Stage 3 : Wild port/polish, 290deg + cams, lightened flywheels, performance clutch, forged internals, NOS/Turbo/Supercharger/Engine swaps.

Inspired from Robin's thread on SBK's I am planning to do something similar for modding of cars. Let us see how it materializes.

Thanks mclaren. Wouldnt porting / polishing actually be a part of stage one?

Hhhhmmm. Well stage 1 upgrades are mostly just the basic ones that are carried out without having to opening the engine (which most public wouldn't find it crazy to do). Hence the intake and the exhaust mods. To stage 1 mods you can also add enlargement of throttle body.

Also porting/polishing too has different stages. Stage 1 to Stage X where each stage is defined by the wilderness of the ports. This however is tuner based and varies from each one of them.

Technically speaking, like Rahul said, each stage differs from tuner to tuner. There are stage 6 mods on offer from Top Secret Tuning - one of the more known tuners, specialised in Japs.

Basically, stages are classified as;

Stage 1: All external mods without opening up the block.
Example; Tyres, FFE, etc.

Stage 2: Minor mods that do not involve alteration of orginal specs, in terms of bore/stroke and suspension dimensions (as per manf. specs).
Example; Mild cams, strut braces, etc.

Stage 3 - Stage x: Full blown mods.
Example; Overboring, NOS, (any FI), race suspension, seam-welded components, roll cages, the works....

Thanks GTO for asking this question which has been lingering in my mind.. however did not want to live to my Newbie status..

Mclaren and Veyron.. thanks for clarifing.

I understood that Stage1 means everything done without opening up and messing with the engine. This is the stage which I am venturing into...

Like I said in my intro or first few posts.. Filters, Headers and FFE.

1 done - 2 to go

Sorry missed another lingering question.. While we are clearing doubts might as well slide one in.

Naturally aspirated means sans turbocharger, right?
