I am in the process of hotrodding my 87 padmini.
Putting in a Baleno engine + a Gypsyking gearbox into . Yes it will take considerable modifications to make this happen.
I tried the Conti engine + engine combo, but the gearbox bell housing is too large and dont want to endanger the structural integrity of the frontend. Additonally the added 100kgs of weight in the front will make it handle even worse..

Currently in the process of procuring the engine.. Will post more details after I do so..

Thanks
Vijay

Any mods done with Pictures would be helpful..especially in the areas of engine mounting and gearbox used..etc..

An easy option as already suggested is the esteem engine..It transforms the character of the Fiat..Drive one to believe it..

The Jaya diesel used to be a good Diesel option for the Premier Padmini. You can check Relocate for further info.

Good Link BT..I didnt know that..

Their Jaya Diesel Engines in Coimbatore used to be a great fit onto ambys and give a good performance too.. Have driven some modded ambys that used to do 120 effortless..way back in the early 90s..

Will need to find out about the Fiat engine though!!. Good link ..thanks

Default Diesel engine in a Fiat

Although a mordern diesel is the most practical in a Fiat, getting RTO permission in Bangalore is a pain...

The S1 executive Padminis were pretty quick, smooth, 13 km/litre in normal driving conditions so the S1 engine is good for ur day to day use.
Hey wat bout the TATA indicas engine??? the Honda engine will fit physically, but again these are FWD engines so gettin ur drive to the RW's means a lot of differences n tat means a lot of work will be required.

Default Honda and Tata Indica engine

The Indica engine is too crude for what I am looking for... Hoda has possibilities, but no matching rwd gearbox.. with the marutis, we have a gearbox that will fit..

I think you should first try tweaking the stock engine by head polishing, etc. If you still are unsatisfied with the performance, you could try engine swapping which is surely going to be a tediously process

You could also contact Mr. Behram Dhabhar (DHABHAR.BEHERAM) and 1100D for they have thier expertise with FIATS.

Just came across this thread. Any updates on the mods you guys were planning? The Premier Padmini is a nice car for any level of driving, and pretty easy to maintain. Every once in a while I think of getting one (my father drives one too). These threads stir that dream every time.

My cousin has put in a NISSAN 2.1 diesel engine into a padmini. I think its '87 model. Anyhow, the whole project set him back by 30k!

btw, after the engine swap, the car gives 16 - 17 kmpl in the city and 20 - 22 on the highway. We had this car at our place for a month and i loved the torque it produced. It never required to be put into 1st gear. But the car used to understeer in the turns if accelerated. The gear box was tough, but it never missed any gear. I forgot whether it had the stock gearbox or not. I will find more details and put it here.
