Default 1996 Sumo to 'Grande' Victa

Hi,

My TATA sojourn started way back in 1996 when I bought my Tata Sumo. It was with me for 3 years and 55000kms when I replaced it with a Tata Safari. This was a non power steering one with an after market AC.

This was sold to my friend who still has it.

1996-sumo-grande-victa-sumocomb.jpg

Now it has had a makeover along with the engine work it underwent. It has not had any clutch work done to my best knowledge as my friend does not keep tabs properly.

His family chose the colour. It was to be the Sumo Grande Copper. This is how it has turned out to be.

@condor: Thanks. Corrected.

@trrk, you mean viCta, not viSta.

The Sumo's a good work-horse. Though the NA version is terribly under-powered. I just wish even my TCIC powered steed had more horses under it's bonnet.

You are not alone my friend. I absolutely second that thought. I feel the new ones are a little chunky.

That was my first reaction to the first picture that he had sent me.

Well the colour was to be Grande's Sunset Orange and not copper as mentioned by me.

The 'old' picture was taken on August 26, 2008 when it was in Alleppey for a function.

It is OK as far as the registration number goes.

Hopefully the stepney cover would be changed to the Victa version soon.

Default Queries

Hi,

This may not be the place to elicit quick replies, but still:

1. Can Sierra seat belts sourced? An old Sierra's belts were used for this car, but the left side is not working properly.

2. The Grande Sunset Orange was chosen as the colour. The only hitch was that there are variants of this shade with differences in the individual shade formula. The colour chosen was from the shade chart and was the first variant with which the Grande was launched. The paint shop person checked with Tata and procured the latest variant.

The first one had more of Gold and this one has more of Red.

My friend absolutely hates this shade and wants to go to the variant he liked.

What would be the most effective way of getting it done?

@trrk:Could you please post some more close ups of that roof mounted blower. The fitment looks well... slightly hasty and tacky. Sorry.

didnt nitrous do something similar to his sumo?, that was a really good job.

trrk: no other option rather than to paint it again with a single coat of the re-formulated colour he wants. a single coat should do as the new colour wont be much of a diff than the current colour.

As soon as I get snaps from him. He does read the thread as a guest. Why sorry? That contraption was conceptualised and fabricated under my supervision. Though the idea was to redesign it to make it look better, the working was just the way we wanted it to, it never went under the surgeon's knife again.

When my friend took my Sumo, one of the conditions was that this should come with the car!

It has been working for over 12 years now.

Thanks. I doubt whether he is bothered about the wheel caps! He is very concerned about the colour, though!

Is the work done by nitrous here on the board? If so, kindly point it to me.

Thanks for that paint tip. That may be what his painter is also considering. My friend would go to the extent of a srip and repaint if needed!

altough there was a thread, it didnt get any repiles, but his gallery recieves a lot of action.

the links are:

the thread:
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/modifi...ce-needed.html (Repainting & "Sumo to Sumo victa" conversion. Advice needed.)

nitrous is one of the oldest team-bhpians and a very helpful person, pm him if you need any help or any directions in your rebuild.

full stripping wont be necessary, just a fresh coat with the reformulated paint will suffice imo.

The blower part is the original blower which came in the Sumo with a two speed switch. The same was taken out of its housing and was refabricated in aluminium to match the extra grill that was procured from an accessory shop.

Manages to spread the cool air from the front towards the back quickly and evenly.

Neat idea that ! And the close-up brings out what's really in that deceptive looking 'contraption'.

Try adding the side-claddings from the Victa. The claddings are actually very neatly designed. Will give an opportunity for dual colors.

Thanks. Never thought spending Rs 500 or so in 1996 would keep on working its magic for all this time!

Did suggest to my friend. Don't know whether he will take it up.

With Onam season full on our (textile businessmen) minds, any further action would happen only after September 2!

It's often the simple ideas that have the big impact.

@Rajesh, dont you find the engine lacking in power ? Esp if using the a/c ? I am finding even my 90bhp / 190Nm less, esp when I switch the a/c on.
