But, K&N specifically instructs only to use K&N oil and cleaner, even lightweight oils are on the list of unusables. I'm sure the dealer stocks the oil and cleaner too.

C'mon Ported...ofcourse they will instruct customers to use "ONLY K&N OIL". That's an additional source of income. Its just branding, similar to "Honda" oils and so on.

Well that is a bit of a tricky one
Coz the specs of the oil are not too clear
However, using the wrong one would definitely render the filter useless
(too thick/too thin a oil)

Also, how come you need to oil the filter?
Have you just cleaned it, if so what did you use for it?

If you hv bought it new, thwn it does not need oiling

Some details on that please

Still suggest you use the K&N oil, as the specs of the oil aint too clear

yea, K&N are smart. They don't release the grade of oil they use, but just say that only K&N oil is good for their filters

the dealer who sold you the filter will be able to provide u with the correct cleaning aids when the time comes..as pointed out ,if newly installed it requires no cleaning for 6 months,,at least, however it needs to be installed correctly as the purpose of fitting it will get defeated if it is not in the direct path of clean air flow,,no point having more surface area and no air

K&N filters come pre-oiled from the company...a new filter does not require to be oiled tehy are ready to use.
K&N filters need to be reoiled only when they are washed...i recommend using the K&N oil. it is available as a pack of oil and shampoo at any dealer outlet or car accessory shop

dont use any other oil than k&n cleaning oil.
