I thought harley davidson has a trademark (Not a patent) for the sound their bikes make but this site says they withdrew the application in 2000 after trying for it for a while. No reference to ferrari anywhere

I dont know about Ferrari, but i remember once reading that Lamborghini actually spends time analyzing the sound from their cars before going into production, and then makes changes to the exhaust system purely based on acoustics.

Its just rumours I guess. Maybe there's something to decrease the sound made by exhaust and a patent for it. And if thers one, try Merc to be teh patent owner!

Kphilip,

I did a quick search but no luck.
I remember seeing this years ago, there was a picture of a black countach (if my memory serves me right) in a room with lots of audio equipment....
I'm sure you can find something if you look long enough.

I dont think Harley Dave can get their "sound" patented - they're not THAT good at getting things consistently right, NOT EVEN noise.

Zippo lighters have their sound patented.

Harley sounds are not patented. But its different from the rest of the other V-twin bikes. Saw on Discovery that they do spend a huge amount of time and money to maintain their uniqueness.

MGM has the Lion's roar registered as a "Service mark"... this is very similar to a trademark, but not really a Patent.

As far as I know, Harley had to drop the lawsuit but they claimed that they have won the "Public Opinion Poll" for their bikes sound (they call it the POTATO-POTATO-POTATO sound )

The three tone chime of NBC has been registered as a service mark.

Am sure there must be others....
