Default Re:Defective Roots windtones

I find the ROOTS Windtones to be suffering from an inherent design flaw.

Firstly, there are no tabs to hold the trumpet in place in case the bolts come loose. This means that the black trumpet can fall off if & when the bolts come off.

Secondly, the bolts come off in a few months due to lack of a washer & leakage of air from the trumpet starts. This leads to a very unpleasant & shrill noise if you sound the horn.

I am currently replacing the bolts for the second time in a year of ownership. It goes without saying that the horns are 100% original.

Will post pics soon.

Yesterday I got Roots windtone in chennai for Rs 500 and he also got Bosch. Roots is definitely shrill than bosch so I picked windtone. I have fixed Roots vibrosonic 3 yrs before in my pulsar still works very good. I disconnected low tone because of its loudness . Planning to shift to my GTX and replace with windtone

Each time I re-tighten the nut, the tone becomes a bit softer, again, progressing towards downright shrill when the nuts become loose.

My post is more of a caution rather than a complaint and I felt the need to inform other BHPians of this periodic problem so that one doesn't lose the trumpet if & when the nuts fall off.

Roots windtones are among the best 'polite' horns that I've used till date. They are loud enough, but not in a nagging kind of way.

I've been using Hella Red-grills and they are marvellous. Seriously, they can move those indi-cabies and autowallas with relative ease. But recently the horns are having some issues and it seems like that at times only one of the horns is working. But the issue is that it doesn't happen all the time and so I'm not sure if I can get them replaced under warranty as when I would take it to dealer they might just work fine. Or can this be just some loose connection? They are installed under the bumper of the Scorpio(replaced the OEM Hellas) and I'm not sure if I can open the bumper and check :(

Exactly my problem too. But fortunately for me it completely conked off, so it went to the shop for replacement under warranty. But its more than 2 weeks, yet to get it replaced as the shop guys does not got one from the Company.

Edit: Guess mine is of 3 months warranty & have crossed 60 days. When I get the replacement from the Company, will the warranty start afresh or it will be only for one month?

I lost the count of Hella Red grill horns I have fitted on my cars & bike.
Particulalry the Made in Germany ones, they used to sound awesome.
Now a days you get only Made in India Horns, they don't produce the exact sound as that of Germany made one's, these are slightly harsh.

Reasons for your horns not working properly
1. Loose connection
2. Needs a tuning (there's a black rubber bush at the back, just turn n adjust it)
3. Point set (the inside plates) might have worn out.
4. What relays have you put ? If The hella one, sometimes they(electricians) say that the hella digital one get struck (current doesn't pass properly).

Mostly you issue is either 2 or 3.

I had plans of installing Hella Red Grille but being the fan of Skoda's horn i decided otherwise. A local TVS trumpet was the alternative and got it for about INR 600, 2 years ago. Pretty good sound. Sometimes when overtaking, the constant honk from the TVS sounds like as if you're sitting in the engine of a train and listening to the horn. Not harsh but easy on ears and do the job.

Got the Hella Red Grills installed yesterday at Evo! They are scarily loud. Commands immediate respect from unruly autowalas and unsure bikers driving slow in the middle of the road and more than a considerate second thought from the bigger vehicles. :P I am enjoying it!

Got the Hella Red Grills installed to my Fabia today. Sound much better than that of the stock ones. In all, I am happy with the upgrade.
Bought those from 'Jainam' @ Opera House, Mumbai for 1,080...
BTW, (one my call it as an afterthought but), how to differentiate between the OE & Fake Hella Red Grills? Do share some inputs.

PMed the details.
You'll have to call him first so that he procures the horns in advance ☻

He gives you an original Hella warranty card. So np worries on that end. ☻
