20W50 is too thick for most cars, unless you got a good reason to use it...

Don't bother, man.
The tropical winter in Mumbai doesn't go low enough to warrant a 'winter oil change'.
The case would be different if you're from Shimla or Dharamsala.
Just let the engine idle for like 20-30 seconds or so during very cold starts.

Hi Guys,
My Oil woes do not seem to end.I went hunting for the shell oil again at local stores and they only had shell helix 20W 50 and no 15W 40.
15W 40 is only available for diesel it seems.

Both the places i went to mentioned that Maruti recommends 20W 50 for the 800.So now i am stumped as to what to?.I

I also digged up another old bill from Sai Service (MASS) which mentions catsrol GTX 20w 50 (MGP) as the oil used.

I would like to know opinions of fellow BHPians on this.

maruti has recently changed specs of oils for almost every vehicles. even while changing the gearbox oil i saw that maruti has upgraded to oil grade for my alto.
as far as you stick to the specs there wont be any issues. i think 20w50 would be fine.

Sorry, I didn't know which car was in question, and frankly I don't know what the recommended grade for 800. If that is the recommended grade, you can go for it. But don't listen to "places". Just look into your manual. But as mentioned earlier, I don't think Maruti ASCs use this grade anymore for any car... had a look at their chart last time I was there.

Default engine oil for maruti

Now this makes me confused as far as I know, Maruti recommends 20W40 (My alto manual says so) for alto, 800 atleast and not 20 W50. Castrol, IOC and other MGO are 20W40 SF grade. Lately I have seen some posts in different threads that Maruti has recommended 20W50!

It is also difficult to source 20W40 oil in higher grades like SM which normally are coming in 20W50 like castrol.

There is a table given in my Alto manual for selection of oil, based on the expected ambient temperature. The mean spec is 20W40, API SF or higher. The lower the minimum temperature, then it can be 15W40 / 10W40. If the max temperature will be 40 C or higher, it should be 20W50 / 10W50.

20W50 will be good for Maruti 800 or Alto anywhere in India - except in places where minimum temperature in winters can go really low.

@sumeeth

Buy Shell Helix HX5 15W40 - API SL, gasolene engine oil only.

Had been to my MASS this evening. The chart in the workshop indicated 20W40 for 800. 20W50 did not figure anywhere for any car.

There are so many brands for 20W40... can't be that difficult to get SM. Check out Petronas, Total, Valvoline, Gulf, Motul, etc. I'm sure they have SJ or SL if not SM.

Hi,
attached is the old bill for the oil.My car is a 97 model.The bill is dated '99.The 2nd last line states the oil used is 20W/50 MGO.
Also the 800's manual does have a table which also mentions the 20w 50 as the grade to be used according to ambient temperatures.I am not posting the pic of the same as the image is too blurred.

Racoon buddy,if you took the trouble to go to MASS just to verify this, thanks a lot.

Anyways i plan to drive to Shell bunk this wednesday which is a little far away from my home but will be worth the trip if i get the oil.

Gansan thanks for tip.

Viscosity 10W40, 10W50 for temp between -20 C to 40 C;

Viscosity 10W30 for temp. between -20 C to 30 C;

and 5W30 for temp.between -30 C to 30 C.
