@Leoshashi; Did you notice the oil is API/SN the highest grade. Even the Idemitsu/Savsol 0W30 full synth marketed by Honda was API/SM. Only recently it has become API/SN.

Yes Sir, thanks for pointing this out.

I was specifically looking for oils having atleast SM grade. Thanks to BHPian nitrous, my doubts were cleared about the various API ratings available.

I hope this ultra modern rating won't harm my age old engine(Maruti F8D MPFI) , since the viscosity rating is within the recommended values.

Regards,
Shashi

Rwest assured my own view is that there is minimal difference between the higher grades. I will say even the obsolete SG should do fine. I have been a big fan of Castrol, since at least 1980, the main issue used to be the genuineness. Only make sure you get the 10W40 and NOT the 5W30! Your can will not be happy with any SAE30 oil.

Thanks for your kind words, Sir. I have always used a SAE40 grade oil for my M800. This is the first time I am using 10W40. Thanks to the enlightening posts by you and other members, I am well aware of the meaning of these viscosity indices. I will never play with the upper(hot) viscosity of oil for any vehicle.

To make sure that I get genuine Castrol's, I have made a good rapport with the Castrol distributor of my city.

Regards,
Shashi

Anyone using or used the Mobil Super 1000 5w30 oil? It has the API-SN rating which made me consider it for my next change.

This is a mineral oil. Will be ok to use if the viscosity and API rating are recommended for your car. Which car is it BTW?

For my SX4 VVT Zxi, I use 5W30 of Castrol Magnatec make. I am happy with the oil. Shell Helix 5W30 too was equally good; it was used by MASS. SN rating is no doubt good.

How much is the price of Mobil Super 1000 5W30? Castrol Magnatec 5W30 costed me Rs. 1650 for 3.5 lit can.

Then use it without any fear/doubt in your mind.

Most people on this thread have switched to synthetic and if you are really keen I'd recommend Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30.

Shell Helix Ultra comes in 5W-40 API SN. There is a 5W-30 viscosity too but not officially available in the market.

Shell Helix HX7 is a semi synthetic 10W-40 API SN. I use that in my Palio 1.6. Really good oil, engine is noticeably smoother after running Castrol Magnatec. I have moved away from Castrol products and prefer Shell or Mobil. It's all boils down to personal choice and budget.

Looking for 10w30

Preference for Semi-Synth Blend + SN rating

Unable to find anything in the market, any recommendation?

@aerohit; Castrol Magnatec is available in nw30 rating. Whether n is 5 or 10 is irrelevant. Yes, it is API-SN.

IIRC, 5W30 is available with Shell Helix and you can get it in MGP.

API-SM is pretty good. I use full synth 5W40 which is just API-SM rated.
So, there's no need to chase SN since you don't have any DPF/filter on your exhaust side.

I want oil change for my new Brio. I have decided to go for 10w30 Mineral or Semi Syn (NO full synthetic). Owners manual recommend SN rated oil. However I may go with this Mobil oil even though it is SJ rated.

I did a little reading on API ratings and discovered that slightly lower rating is not necessarily a bad thing, infact it may be good for the engine because higher API ratings have less phosphorus and high detergents. As I understand, the whole point of API is pollution control and not engine life.

Note: even though dealer will do oil change at 10,000 as per service schedule, i want to do it earlier myself, this is because my car was in the stockyard for almost 9 months. Nothing wrong with the car, just personal satisfaction.

Correct, i guess even SJ would do. I just wasnt too familiar with this terminology earlier, but I understand it better now.

Currently I'm running Magnatec 5w30 which is API-SN rated. I generally don't go for Castrol because there are lots of fakes in the market but I had to buy it urgently so made sure I bought it from a dealer listed on their website at least.

I'm getting Mobil Super 1000 for 325 a liter when the mrp is 460.

I've used the Shell HX5 earlier but I think it was API-SL. Now I think they have replaced it with 10w30 which has higher rating.

I have bought Mobil Super 3000 for my next change. I've used it before and it was good. This time I bought it because I got it for a good price. I may go for Super 1000 next time as I change oil every 5k.
