If that's true.. the race's are going to be REAL LONG due to the fact that the car's halfway will need to come in to REBOOT.. just like all good Microsoft OS's.
JOY!!

Yes it is indeed a true news. Along with Bridgestone as single tyre supplier.
The contract is from 2008-2010
http://www.eurosport.com/formula1/fr...to920477.shtml

As ECU supplier is joint project between Microsoft & Siemens. A quick Google search revealed this website
http://www.automation.siemens.com/me..._focus_day.htm

Pitpass.com is running fun competition about the same.
Do have a look.

EDIT: Here is MES website http://www.sea.siemens.com/mes/default.html

Will the steering wheels come with a Cntrl+Alt+Del button ??? If not, their race is over. Imagine how one team can easly hack into other teams ECU wireless transmission frequency and screw it all up.

Unhappy

Drivers like Schumacher, Raikkonen and Alonso will be replaced by expert hackers from Europe and Asia. Whoever manages to hack into the system of each other wins the race.
Super Aguri and Midland will decide to install Linux and will be kicking everyone else's a**.
Wonder what kind of microprocessor they'll use in the ECU chips (Intel or AMD).

I think then we can look forward to more exciting racing now!!

Imagine cars going flat out on the Indy straight and suddenly the software decides to crash and the Blue screen of death comes on the driver's display!!! Now wouldn't that be a lot of fun

Default But here's the Real story

ahem- You lot forgot the main question-
Who are Microsoft MES??

When hearing of the contract , Magneti Marelli were pretty much furious, considering the experence that they have in developing control system for various types of racing machines are were perplexed that such a deal would go microsoft's way - No expereince at all

But what does MES stand for????

Maclaren Electronic Systems...... Yup, you heard me right.
also an expert in ECU's & control systems for the cars
FYI, they operate in the technology centre in woking, but
are supposed to be a completely seperate entity for maclaren racing
and under the Maclaren group umbrella

So its not really Microsoft, its maclaren.

wonder how the teams will react to the news... There's always the spectre
of conflict of interest

Can you back your statement with source?
Because I did some searching over the internet & found following.
MES stands for Manufacturing Execution Systems
Here is Wikipedia article about the same.

And here is anothe source http://www.mcsolutions.co.uk/article...Oea9lGzUFE6bwA

Specially check first paragraph, better yet let me quote it here
Quote:
Microsoft’s and Siemens’ new joint European MES (manufacturing execution systems) Expertise Centre in Genoa is now open for business – providing potential users with a look inside systems for making manufacturing businesses more efficient.

A quote from Sportnetwork.net :
Quote:
The sole supplier of the standard ECU from 2008 will be Microsoft - McLaren Electronic Systems. The fact was somewhat hidden by the FIA, who simply called it Microsoft MES.

Maybe Fernando was right when he said he believed McLaren would be the major force in the future. I am sure they will share their "back door" with McLaren Formula 1 team.
And a link to go with it from pitpass.com : http://www.pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpa...s_art_id=28624

Unfortunately, Wikipedia has an article on Mclaren Electronics System, but its empty.

this from autosport:
Quote:
McLaren company wins ECU bid

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, July 6th 2006, 14:48 GMT

McLaren Electronic Systems, an independent developer within McLaren's group of companies, is behind the successful bid with Microsoft to supply ECUs in Formula One from 2008, autosport.com can reveal.

Although the exact identity of the 'Microsoft MES' company that was announced by the FIA yesterday was unclear, sources have confirmed that the firm involved with Microsoft is McLaren Electronic Systems.

The company has been an independent developer of systems for more than 15 years, and supplies all the current competitors in F1 with different products.

Although MES shares its name with McLaren, and operates from the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, there are no direct links between it and the Formula One team.

MES's company statement claims: "McLaren Electronic Systems is an independent company of the McLaren Group of Companies. It is a leading exponent of the group's technical prowess and design philosophy.

"Its goal is to provide the automotive electronics customer with a complete range of products that are reliable, yet at the very limits of technology.
here's the link but it needs a subscription http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/53006

Adya, MES could be short for a host of companies, its not neccessary that wikipedia will reveal all about such a title.
