Thumbs down Does a stinger/ chamber increase perfromance of a bike?

Certain questions I would like to get answered.
1. Does a stinger/ chamber increase perfromance of a bike?
2. Which is the most optimal design of a stinger/ chamber?
3. Can anybody explain how a stinger/ chamber work, and relevant performance feedbacks....

I think he's talking about an expansion chamber.

On 2 strokes, a chamber is supposed to pull out the spent charge as quickly as possible and without pulling out any fresh charge with it. In fact, a good chamber will have a pulse going back towards the cylinder to prevent fresh charge from coming out along with the spent charge.

A chamber, if made correctly accodring to the bike will increase the performance of 2stroke bikes.

Off Topic - Are chambers used on 4strokes too? Or are they mufflers??

Mufflers are only used to deaden sound... don't think its used for much else.

For 4 strokes, I don't think they're called expansion chambers. But the exhaust system in a 4 stroke is designed for a slightly different purpose.

On 2 strokes, the pulse is used to push charge back in. On 4 strokes, the exhaust system should be designed in such a way that no pulse goes back to the cylinder. Also, if not designed properly, on a 4 stroke, you could fry your exhaust valve...

Tech whizzes, please correct me if i'm wrong.

Wow! That was an eye opener!! I have put a chamber made manually by my mechanic, for my 4-stroke honda dio, and the performance decreased like anything - specifically :
1) mileage reduced significantly.
2) Pickup reduced.
If further explainations as to why the above two inefficiencies took place, I'd be greatly obliged ( if required, i can post the pic of the internal part of the chamber ....)

..... Thankz a lot guys!!

what exactly did he consider when designing the "chamber" ?

the chamber he has given looks plain simple, with no emphasis on the actual logic behind it ( as given in earlier posts)..... i'm not good at the technical side so bear with me....
It comprises (from outside to inside) of a cylinder (the exterior shell of the chamber), glasswool, mesh, and finally a thin pipe like thing.... i think u call that the muffler....

I would appreciate some logic on the said above configuration....thankz

This sounds more like a simple free flow design sort of exhaust... I have my doubts if he considered factors like back pressure when designing it...

Think Satya's right here...
Your mechanic has only done something to the exhaust system...As expansion chambers (stingers as u call them) can only be applicable to 2-strokes. As for a free-flowing exhaust, I think that if not done properly it adversely affects the exhaust valves...am i right? And it does affect the average also...just makes the bike sound better.

yeah.... there was a drop in performance.... like the pick up reduced quite a bit, but it did great between 50-70 km/hr...... the exhaust valve is ported......

Now don't tell me the dio has got reeds also.

U don't put chambers/stingers to four stroke engines. Ur mech must be 2-T specialist.....

Use a free flow exhaust sys.And get the tuned length right. And add performace air filter something like UNI or K&N.
