Red face CBR250R gives relief to the RX after 14.5 years: Tale of two bikes

The Iron RX

> Used it right from 12th to college to office shuttle. Loved it then ~ still loving it.
> In Bangalore traffic I just could not get myself to drive 25-30km every day. Cutting through traffic in the 2 wheeler seemed the best thing to do.

Love it:
  • 2T screamer
  • Light and flickable
  • 1 down 3 up
  • Sounds awesome when 2 RXs shift late in tandum
  • Blipping the throttle
  • Engine Braking
  • My 2 boys love it
Dont Love:
  • Rattles the bolts off you
  • Not quite reassuring over 100kmph
  • I cannot trust it for a long ride
  • 3 Rebores and 1 around the corner
  • Average brakes
  • Aging bike with over 140,000kms
  • Too many niggles
Replace with?
Main criteria - Excellent Cost per BHP

The Replacement: Came earlier today

can't agree more with the love it.

The bike starts flying at above 100 and average brakes.

Mine has been reliable to the core. My dad used it for about 15 years (averaging 60-80 Kms a day) and I have been using it for 10 years, actually 9 haven't used it over the past year. Never had any problem except for the normal wear and tear (clutch cables and chains) which I consider are my mistakes. It's been more reliable than the Suzuki and Honda we had.

Totally agree. Get a companion. I don't have the heart to replace it. So, the Honda and Suzuki came and went but the RX has stayed.

IronWolf,
Believe this bike is owned by you right from day 1? Would suggest you to give it a proper classic restoration, do away with those flimsy front mudguard, crash bar & seat. Get it restored to Company specs, if you need help with a RX Bore lemme know (can help you with a G-3 Spec Barrel) and have it for keeps. Betcha even 5 years from now, you take the bike for a stroll, it will never stop amazing ring ding ding stuff.
What is the replacement that you have bought?

Even today RX in BLR which is of 1986-89, with Y1 / Y2 Bore, Mikuni Carb costs not less than 34-35K. Its become a collectors' item now. viewers' envy, Owners pride !

Replacement was the wrong word to use at 1am. I dont intend to sell it.
Till death do us part.

Reinforcement/companion is a better word

Ring dinga ding is pure music. and like I said 2 or more even better it sounds.

Yes, from Day 1 and kinda like the slight mods, which really dont take away the 80s look. You missed the fatter and ugly headlight dome.

As for the Bore am really interested now. PM me the details and / or your number. Thinking of a making it even more of a pocket rocket (within some limits) than it is - exterior remaining stock.

Priceless to those who dont want to sell it.
  • 2 Mechs at the new showroom asked me to sell
  • Neighbour said - 'so now you selling it right?'
  • 2 weeks back after a blast down Kamaraj road - Comp street to Toms Bakery a Pulser 200 rider stopped next to me at the signal and made a offer.

I have a 1992 model silver RX, which has a strange 'sales' story behind it. I tried to sell it off twice, but strange enough both times when i rode it off to the buyer, the tyres punctured. The first time it happened i was on way to show the bike to a prospective buyer and the second time i had fixed up the price and was going to deliver it when it punctured. I have NOT sold it yet !

Just last week i was debating whether to sell it or crome-plate/paint it.......when bang here comes your thread and then the thought ' A fool and his RX are soon parted'......so i think it is till death do us part.

Parked next to my son's Candy Red Hero Cycle. Both are quite happy that their FAT bike is next to their cycle.

Buying Experience at City Honda
  • Friendly Sales person
  • Tried selling the Display piece but did not push post hearing a 'Not interested'
  • Quite aware of the product
  • Explained the run in and features of the bike
  • Smooth processing
  • PDI done
  • Commitment on the Number took a day longer (not really in his control)
Due to delays with the number plate and a busy weekend I could not go for a decent ride this weekend. Next Saturday morning need to crank up some kilometers on this thing.

Why not, Started this thread to talk about both bikes.

Old School screamer vs New school ... well still discovering it - so not sure how to describe it

Nice Bike the CBR250 - But dont know whether you would get the thrills of the RX100 - 2 Strokes have their own charm if ridden correctly!

Enjoy!

Thanks MK & Vikram,

Each one is from a different school of biking.

So far I seem to be adjusting to the CBR well.

Today was the first 10km+ ride in traffic and it wasn't that hard to manage.
Engine Heat was at just 3 bars.

Congrats on your ride ironwolf. At a later point while at a traffic you will experience heat blowing out towards your leg, nothing to worry, Just ensure you keep your bike off and engine button switched on at the time. Hope you riding under 4k rpm's.
