Default KTM India's next : Fully faired 250!

Ever since the launch of the Duke 200 there seems to be a lot of speculation claiming that the next KTM to hit India will be the Duke 350.

But I have just found news on the contrary.

OD had a video showing the Duke 200 walkaround as well as an interview with KTM's CEO Stefan Pierer. The conversation between mins 3:27 to 4:05 goes something like this:

OD: You told us there are a lot more products coming to India on this platform....what products are you talking about specifically?

SP: KTM is a race brand...the next one is a fully faired version, we call it Moto3....we are going on the MotoGP this year with this bike.....looks very similar to the upcoming model, which is homologated....the third version....mix between enduro and supermoto, classic KTM....also the big displacement 350 is coming....

OD: That will also come in these three forms eventually?!

SP: Yes

So the main man has already given confirmation that the next bike is a fully faired one, based on the Bajaj/KTM platform i.e trellis frame, liquid cooled fuel injected single cyl, rear mono and upside down front forks, front rear discs etc...

Now how come a 250?!
Well the Moto3 name itself is a giveaway and the fact that KTM is on the MotoGP 2012 grid as an engine supplier. Remember the classic 125 2-strokes have been replaced in 2012 with the Moto3 category and the regulations are:
  • Single cylinder, upto 250cc displacement
  • Upto 14k rpm, max 2 fuel injectors
  • 6 speed gearbox
I have a very strong belief the upcoming fully faired bike will be a spin off from the Moto3 effort. Of course the road going versions will not get competition engines but one can expect a similar 250 displacement. KTM might aim for a 33ps output aimed at European class A license holders (they can ride bikes upto 33bhp), similar to the Ninja 250.

The 2012 season starts on 8th April, perhaps the launch will coincide with this, giving the Duke 200 a couple of months to establish itself.

Whichever way it goes this will be one hell of a rocket especially considering how light the platform is. First the Duke200 followed by the new generation Pulsars and then bigger displacement KTMs, Bajaj seems to be in no mood to let go of its dominance in the Indian performance sector!!

Guys,

I am very surprised by the lack of interest in this thread It's now official that the KTM Duke 200 has been received well by the Indian market. Which paves way for higher displacement bikes.

I, for one, liked the bike. But, for a non-biker like me, it's a little too 'small' I mean it doesn't seem to give me a 'big bike' feel, any which way I look at it. Its rivals (although not exactly rival), CBR 250 and Ninja 250, look decisively bigger. People like me, who need an aspirational bike but are not willing to spend north of 6 lacs on Ducati 795/Triumph Street Triple 675/ HD Iron 883 practically don't have too many options.

I am looking for more clarity on Duke 350...essentially the same package, with slightly bigger size and certainly a bigger engine. Works perfectly for me. The only problem is, when is it coming?

Designers are constantly striving to make bikes as compact and light n flickable as possible. Literbikes today are almost as tiny as the 600s we had 15 years ago.

Try out the Hyosung 650. The KTM250 is not going to be any bigger methinks.

The KTM200, I am passing but a 350 umm. I guess it's quite early to talk about it when the 200 itself is fresh off the oven. I guess they may also reconsider it based on the response for 200. Who knows they might go lower on the cubic, say even 125.

I am generally not a big fan of Korean automotive companies. Although I have realized companies like Hyundai needs to be respected for the sheer length they have covered in terms of tech advancement, when it comes to any aspirational product, I tend to give them a pass.

I know that finding a 'semi aspirational' product at a budget (2 lacs odd) is a challenge. The KTM 200 'almost' passes as a 'regular' bike (Pulsar, Hunk, FZ15 types..), and I don't want to be seen on something that is decisively regular.

IIRC, the 250 is going to be a fully faired sports bike (due to moto cross connection) while the next Duke will be 350. Don't rally know which one is coming first.

The CBR250 is a default option but somehow I am not impressed enough. In any case, I am more of a car-er than bike-er. Which in turn means that I am in no hurry to purchase my new bike.

The slightly bigger stance and engine capacity is what interests me. I heard the CEO interview, its confusion with no clear message.

wow! The fully faired 250 ktm is truly a delightful thought! I love the 200 as it is. There is that niggling need for a little more. The 250 will fit the bill. IMO ktm is in no hurry to launch more models right away. They might want to see how the duke200 fares in the next 3-6 months.

During the Pulsar 200 NS launch, i was expecting Rajiv Bajaj to say something about the KTM 690 which was speculated to be launched in India.
But when he and Mr. Srinivasan confirmed the news of KTM 350 next year start and Pulsar 350 next mid i was in complete shock as there were hardly any speculation in this category. So KTM 250 is a complete no no for now.
Lets wait and see what happens next year!

I have a feeling that we will get a glimpse of it much before that. See, the bike will typically get manufactured and ready much before the India launch. Also, they will have started the exports to Euro zone at least 6 months before the India launch. As with KTM Duke200, I expect almost the same product to be directly lunched in India.

Totally unnecessary!

If ktm cannot give ABS or slipper clutch on the 250, there is absolutely no reason why people would choose RC250 over the RC200.

There is not a substantial improvement of performance in the RC250. RC200 retails at 2 lakhs on the road, RC 390 at 2.6 lakhs on the road. If they launch RC250 at 2.3, it is a no brainer to pay 30k more and get a complete bike RC390!

Absolutely!

And the issue is the price. The 250 makes the 390 feel like a bargain, with all that extra power and a whole lot of additional kit.

Also this looks like the current gen bikes while KTM are going to unveil an all new 2018 RC this Nov, so better to just wait.

Based on what I see on the outer ring road traffic, there are a substantial number of 250s than 390s. "Looks" crowd. Dukes i.e.
