Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India has begun its assault for No. 1 position in India's massive 2 wheeler market. The Dream Neo is the company's cheapest offering with the base version coming with kick start, drum brakes and wire spoke wheels for Rs 43,150 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Dream Neo with electric start, disc brakes and 6-spoke alloy wheels tops out at Rs. 47,240 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

This 109cc commuter plays it safe in terms of design with a small bikini fairing and twin-pod instrument console (the very same layout pioneered by the Splendor all those years ago!). Honda has priced the Dream Neo at just Rs. 200 more than Hero's Splendor. The 100 - 110cc mass motorcycle segment commands nearly 50% of the Indian 2-wheeler market.

The bike's 109cc air-cooled 4-stroke engine comes with the company's new "Honda Eco Technology" (HET). It develops 8.25 BHP (@ 7,500 rpm) with 8.63 Nm torque (@ 5,500 rpm). Fuel economy is a claimed 74 kpl under ideal test conditions. The engine is based on Honda's existing Dream Yuga motor. The wheelbase length is 1,258 mm while ground clearance is rated at 179 mm. The rear wears a 5-step adjustable suspension. Tyres are tubeless on all variants, except the base.

Honda is eyeing total 2-wheeler sales of 39.3 Lakh units by 2014 (an increase of 43%). Honda is also increasing the number of dealerships to 2,500 by the end of the year (from the 1,950 it has currently).

Competition in the future will arrive from Yamaha who is working on a motorcycle priced at USD 500 (rather at odds with the brand's premium image in the Indian market). In the near term, the Dream Neo will pose a significant threat to entry level commuter bikes from Hero, Suzuki and TVS.

Some dude from HH joined Honda recently?

I still see people buying the Unicorn. Guess the brand name will help this one too.

This new launch is nothing but a rehashed Yuga, everything is same except for the price which are about 2000 rupees less than the Yuga and comes in only Red colour. Wonder what different is Honda going to make with the Neo.

This looks more like a Hero Honda than a Honda. Those typical reflectors on the front mudguard & that sticker job!

Such a strong brand recall Hero has that it can be identified with it's indicators only. I wont be surprised if this turns out to be a market dud. Honda has good machines but the way things are shaping up in the two wheeler market; I feel Hero will come up as the winner eventually. Hero sells the same models with different brand names but ensures that each brand gets its own space. "all brands under one roof concept of Honda" is something that I really don't like. Shine/Dream Yuga/Neo all get one identity i.e. Honda and that works against them in the long run.

Speldour is a bigger name that Hero IMHO.

Wonder why the brochure has black too, while the website only has red? Pretty sure they wouldn't release it in only one color.

Neo has a larger and slightly more powerful engine compared to the Splendor and carries the much wanted Honda badge. However, they should have played safer and avoided the all-black treatment and left a bit of chrome in a few places (grab rails, silencer, engine). The appeal of Splendor is far beyond just the engine.

I'd like to add, Honda will not be able to turn No.1 without significantly changing the attitude of their salesmen.

Good move by Honda, though it will still take some time to dent the sales of the Splendor. I feel that these bikes mean a lot of economic sense and convenience to all those who need to commute a lot in the city daily.

This is one very valid point. When I had been to the Honda showroom to see the Unicorn, the attitude of everyone in the showroom was just no good. It was like take it or leave it. They made me come thrice for the test drive which was a major turn off. After that I forgot the Unicorn and got myself the Suzuki GS150. They really need to work on improving their customer relations.

I think this is what people will start buying once Hero stops using Honda engines.

IMHO, Honda will always win in the long run. They are way ahead in terms of technology and R&D.

We have seen what kind of vehicles Hero is churning out and their design and development is just a name for sticker changers.

And yes now this post is going to get responses which will say that they have tied up with EBR, but seriously EBR is not a mass market vehicle producer and it remains to be seen how their strategic partnership works out and what they are able to bring to us.

Again, just my 2 cents.

I can see a Hero Honda splendor with a shine headlamps and fairing.

This will sell as it is a Honda and it is a 100cc engine. Most of the commuter oriented bikes sell what ever happens except for a few.

Waiting to see how the market responds to this with respect to Hero Splendor.

+1 to that. Can't make out from the pictures whether this is more similar to the Shine/Yuga or the CD-Deluxe.
