@Ebonho

My 500 story is such that i took a loss in an enticer for around 9k. Got the enticer when it was launched, used it for 9 months, test drove a 350, and simply asked the dealer for a 500. His name was Naren and he was part of the madbulls here. A week later, i am at work and i get a call from Naren stating we are waiting outside to deliver the bike. Shut down my computer, saw the greayish green beauty. 9k loss balanced at that right moment. Its been almost 9 years now and there is no regrets. In fact i kept collecting parts and now i have 2 500 piston/barrel. Its so deeply attached that there is no way i will let her go. May be if someone says they want to pay 5L cash i may be tempted

I will post a picture of both my 500 and newly acquired 350 for my brother.

As you added, having them both makes one appreciate each for what they truly are(WITHOUT BIAS)

And the best part is i exactly know when my bull refuses to start which she has never done in the last 8 years. She drinks a lot but dances to my tunes which is perfectly fine. I wont mind feeding her some JD if she is ok

One thing common to all 500 owners is the stocking of spares. Get ten 500 owners together and hypnotize them into disclosing their hidden stash of spares. You will in all probability have enough to build a few 500's new from scratch.

My 500 drinks too. Sometimes she sips. Sometimes she gulps. All part of the game of keeping her on the road, and the raw feel of thundering loudly, with appreciative looks from those around. Even from the new RE owners. There is an undeniable magnetism these old beauties have, and I still enjoy the lingering after-smell of grease and petrol and 20W50 on my hands after working on her.

P.S. Would love to see photos of another old 500. 2004 right? Yours then must be a Royal Enfield and not an Enfield. I think they discontinued the legendary athena grey after that, and replaced later with the black.

Yup I was right. Yours is a Royal Enfield. So I claim seniority!

Lovely bike bro. Keep her.

Surprisingly, though it must be the camera angle, the 390 looks bigger and more imposing than the Bullet!

If I am not wrong, the top of Duke 390's fuel tank does sit a little higher than the bull's fuel tank and the headlight mask most certainly is bigger. Not built like a bullet though.

Love the white wall tyres.
I've always loved bullets. Have owned one for close to 10 years before the 390 came along. My brother still has a C500 and it really is a very well built motorcycle. My only grouse with RE is that their aftersales sucks (The only reason probably why I'm not a repeat customer). And I'm trying to be polite here.

Thinking of replacing my 2001 Splendor. The bike is working flawlessly till date. Starts with first kick(with choke) even after weeks of hibernation, good aceleration for a 100cc. Only very minor niggles till now.

Visited KTM and RE today to check out Duke 390 and TBTS 350 respectively. Did not test drive the Duke as I mainly wanted to check if the posture is comfortable for me and if I can ground my legs comfortably(height 5'6). Posture and saddle height wise i find it suits me better than Pulsar 200NS. I prefer upright position due to bad back. Need to do a test drive soon.
Then proceeded to RE showroom and test drove TBTS 350. Have ridden only Splendor, Suzuki max 100R before and was little skeptical if i can manage the 200Kg. But felt immediately at home in TBTS. Short test drive felt good except for some chain snapping in the test bike and my inability to switch to right gears - I was struggling to find neutral and first gear.

The hospitaity was average in both the showrooms, with RE doing a slightly better job than KTM. Quoted OTR price and waiting time in Chennai.
Duke 390 - 2.08 L - No waiting time. Immediate delivery
TBTS 350 - 1.46 L - Two months

Why not the TBTS 500, pisthpeeps? I am sure the waiting period will be less than the TBTS 350.

Agree, and you should go for 500 CC, waiting period is definitely lesser, and performs better. But then a two month waiting period doesn't look absurd to me, considering RE's history !

The riding posture of TBTS is much better compared to other ones, and fits persons of lower stature with aplomb. You will get used to gear shift pretty quick, and that's not a big concern. Done close to 10K Kms on my TB-500 (2013 model), and if maintained well, its worth the investment. That said, a good friend of mine has KTM 200 and has had almost no trips to service station, but for standard service cycles. With TB, you will definitely require more visits, so requires lot more care and patience ! Will write a separate post on minor and common niggles on my TB500 soon.

In every single way except the pillion seat and fuel tank capacity, the KTM 390 (Duke and RC) eats the RE Thunderbird 500 for breakfast.

Faster, better acceleration, better handling, better braking, better pure riding position, better build quality, better fit and finish, better reliability, modern technology, contemporary looks, better versatility... I could go on, but you get the picture.

The only reason I'm buying a TB500 and not the 390 is because of my wife's pillion seat requirements. With a pilion rider sitting comfortably, there is no better long distance tourer than the TB500 in and around its class, IMHO.

IMO the bikes from the RE stable are more suitable for touring with better riding position and seats suitable for all age groups. But can't say the same for the new age sport bikes with the riding posture especially for long distance tourings.

I feel a TB500 to be much relaxed bike while on a long tour compared to a KTM.

Of course ,bikes like KTM might be better in terms of technology but i feel they are better suited in zipping around town and for short runs.
But again each to his own and its a matter of individual choice and comfort.

A Karizma can keep up with a TB500 all day. And is better in every way.

So can a CBR 250R. And its even more so than the Karizma (better in every way).

Both have very decent tank ranges, rider ergonomics, as well as pillion seats. The Karizma will save you almost 50K in cash. The CBR (non ABS) will cost you as much. And be significantly faster as well.
