Default Rumour: Honda CBR500R India launch in 2014

This is definitely good news to bikers. Lots of models entering into india. Would be interesting to see which segment/price they would place this.

Couple of Honda Mechanics did mention about this few weeks back that they are getting trained on new honda engine. Somehow got conflicting news from them that it is 400 or 500 cc engines. So this news confirms what they mentioned.

You read it first on MotorBeam. Honda will launch the CBR500R in India in early 2014. The Japanese automaker will showcase the Honda CBR500R at the upcoming Auto Expo in February 2014. Our sources inform us that training of service technicians has already commenced in India. Honda has decided to launch a new product every quarter but the company seems to have missed its schedule in this quarter, which saw no launch. The company has been working on bringing in a range of game changing bikes next year.
The Honda CBR500R was unveiled in November 2012. The motorcycle also has street-fighter and adventure siblings which utilise the same engine and underpinnings. The Honda CBR500R is powered by a 500cc, parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine, producing 47 BHP of power and 43 Nm of torque. However this CBR isn’t light and weighs a hefty 194 kgs. 0-100 km/hr takes 5.7 seconds while top speed is 185 km/hr. The bike is offered with ABS as an option but we expect only the ABS model to be sold in India. Braking duties are taken care by 320 mm and 240 mm petal discs at the front and rear respectively.

Sounds great! Wish they brought in the naked version too - that will be killer. But IMHO, 4 lakhs seems a conservative estimate. They might price it more than that.

But I still wish they'd brought in the CB 500X

The spec's are disappointing at least for me.

According to the article...

The Honda CBR500R is powered by a 500cc, parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine, producing 47 BHP of power and 43 Nm of torque. However this CBR isnít light and weighs a hefty 194 kgs.

That's not at all impressive in my books.

I was expecting at least around 65-75 bhp but this is a complete letdown. The 390 itself makes 47bhp on a very light frame giving it excellent power to weight ratio. I wonder what they have put into this bike to make it so heavy. Top whack is also not impressive either.

Looks good though.

It all depends on the pricing.
For a comparison:
Duke390: 375 cc single, 44bhp, 0-100 in 5.5 secs, 165-170 top whack - 2L
Ninja 300: 300cc twin, 39bhp, 0-100 in 6.5, 175+ top whack - 4.2L. (Yeah, way overpriced)

The CBR 500r comes in with a 25% displacement and 1 cylinder advantage over the Duke390, and a 40% displacement advantage over the Ninja 300. So what do we get?
CBR 500r: 500cc twin, 47bhp, 0-100 in 5.7, 180+ top whack. The numbers do look disappointing given the advantages it has.
That's not all - it redlines at 8500 rpm, where the other two will just be getting into their elements and apparently has a similar soft front suspension as the CBR 250r.

So clearly, the CBR500r is more a big brother to the excellent tourer/commuter that CBR250r is then a small brother to the CBR600RR.

Price it at 3-3.25L on road and we have a real VFM bike for what it offers. Abroad the 250r sells for $4k and 500r for $6k (150% more) so 3L is a fair target given 250r sells for ~2L here. If they can price the adventure version as well around the 3-3.5L figure, we have a true go-anywhere bike that will appeal to many, me included.

Price it above 4-4.5 Lacs and everyone will look at the Ninja650R as an option that does so much more for a little extra cost. Especially when you have enough pre-worshipped Ninja650s in the market for 4-4.5 now.

PS: Hope Honda doesn't pull a whammy on us and bring in the CBR400r instead as some fear!

I will not touch Honda with a barge pole, till they change the way they interact with customers / potential customers.

I used to wonder initially why there were comparos between the D390 and the CBR500R - Then it dawned that it differs little in terms of spec.

Honda might need to price its way to success if it launches this.

Any one has any idea on how the CBR sales have been affected with the launch of 390?
