Came across this small news item today.
Source:Firm to launch first electric motorcycle

Quote:
Took Motorcycles is gearing up to launch the country’s first electric motorcycle under brand T6X with a claim to offer 100Km travel on a single charge that can vroom at 85Kmph. The firm, backed by angel investors Ankit Bhati and Bhavesh Agrawal of Ola Cabs, has so far developed five prototypes of electric bike and the ones it plans to commercialise is the fifth model.
Curiosity led me to do an internet search that threw up some more information on the T6X launch.

Checked Tork's website and indeed it talks about the T6X launch.

Default Tork T6X - India's first electric motorcycle to launch soon

Tork Motorcycles, a Pune-based start-up that deals in electric mobility, is planning to launch its first full production electric motorcycle in India in the next couple of months. Named the Tork T6X, this new motorcycle will be India's first all-electric motorcycle.

The company claims that apart from the lithium-ion batteries, no other component of the T6X has been imported from outside India. There aren't any technology tie-ups with international firms either. Hence, the Tork T6X is an indigenously developed electric motorcycle in India.

Tork has also set up a manufacturing plant in Chakan, near Pune. This plant, according to the company, is capable of producing around 50,000 units per year. However, the firm expects to sell around 10,000 units in the first year after the T6X's launch.

The Tork T6X is claimed to deliver a range of 100 km in a single charge. It will have a top speed of 85 km/h.

Tork was established in 2009 by Kapil Shelke, a mechanical engineer from Pune University. The firm is partly owned by Kapil Shelke and his father, and is also funded by Ankit Bhati and Bhavesh Agarwal, co-founders of Ola Cabs. Till date, Tork Motorcycles has made five prototypes of its electric motorcycle project.

That bike looks interesting! I hope that is the final production model of the bike. A 100 KM range for fully electric bike seems good! Though it is still much lesser than the scooters available today; however, I feel this move is in the right direction and welcome this bike!

Any idea on how long will it take to charge the batteries? And ofcourse the all important question - Any idea on the pricing?

Good to see Musks mushrooming in India. First Ather, now this.

If the 100km range is true, and that range can hold for a reasonable time (without depleting within a couple of years of use), this could be a good alternative to most petrol bike users in cities. Not many run 100km every day.

I think its high time, the building codes made charging points in the parking lots compulsory to help this happen soon enough.

I really want the Tork folks to win in a big way, but I don't think the market is ready for it yet, with the price point they plan to offer, owing to the pricey imported battery. Unless they bring their bike to a 2 Lakh offering, which is impossible, this will only stay as a niche EV product. But nevertheless this shouldn't stop them from going forward, these guys dared to be the first in the country to do so. Cheers to these guys who are driven by passion than those corporates who only care about production numbers. I secretly hope they get taken over by Bajaj and take this product to the next level. Fingers crossed.
