MAKE IN INDIA!
Kudos to the people who thought up this scheme. Does any other country in the world use Harleys for police work? Why not a Goldwing then?
Pulsar was probably the best for them. Are Guj cops going to park these bikes in no parking zones blocking the road and all the other rot.
Pray Bangalore doesn't foll suit.

Wasted! Hard earned money of tax payers. With Mr. PM promoting MAKE IN INDIA and then his state government buying Harleys, a big difference in thoughts and implementation.

I am thinking on the same lines. I see no use for these other than motivating the police. And, we all know that's an expensive motivation with tax payers money.

Total waste of public money. They could have bought REs as usual for a fraction of the money. This can't be justified in any way.

In India, does anyone need motivation for Gov't job? And that too police department, where stakes are high? I feel this is brand promotion exercise by Harley and what better place than PM's hometown....

Why the big spend?
- The need for a global motorcycle maker for a show-off global summit.
- A motorcycle with some presence and a cruiser like stance for escorting duties.

Why Harley and not the Triumphs or the Goldwing ?
Harley offered the best deal among the lot and Gujarat took it. (Whatever the deal was)
End result - Harley Davidson is spoken about all over forums, magazines and social media. They could not have asked for a better promotion.

Gujarat Police could have gone for the new RE Thunderbird rather than the HD Street 750 which is expensive to buy as well as expensive to maintain and service. I hope these bikes are used and not rot in the parking lot. The Thunderbird is more fuel efficient than the HD and also the RE has a bigger fuel tank of 20 litres while the HD has a tank of 13 litres. Thus :-
- RE can run approximately 600 kms in one tank while HD can run approximately 200 kms in one tank.
- Thus, the RE would be good for long police chases or escorts and would be cheaper to buy as well as maintain.

I'm all for better equipment for cops but their choice of bikes is both gimmicky and a waste of taxpayer money. If they need fast bikes to serve their purpose then a Duke 200/390 for much less money would probably do a better job with better ground clearance too to be able to actually chase down someone.

I agree , but is it not a CKD ? we all know that PM's favorite SUV is the Mahindra Scorpio. PM may not be directly involved in putting these HDs in the front, but whoever took that decision will face some music . It will send a wrong image about the whole "make in India" slogan or what ever it is .

A super bike or a big liter class / semi liter class police bikes are cool and I would love to boast about it with my foreign born cousins , but still utter waste of public money.

USA uses a lot of Harleys mostly for traffic policing duties. Policemen/ women can easily hide out of sigh on these motorcycles (e.g. between two parked cars) and can swoop down on violators out of nowhere. A police car is more visible and people tend to avoid speeding or signal jumping if they see a police car around and that is why there are some policemen who use bikes in larger cities to catch such offenders. The article also mentions that 45 nations use HD for police work.

Calcutta Police had a fleet (17 if IIRC) of RD350s! Only one running now.

Do note: The Street is surely Designed, Built in india so does qualify for Made in India.

On a sidenote the police could have done with a pulsar or a karizma if they wanted reliability and style. But hopefully its just a handful of motorcycles and not a whole bunch of them.

2015 is going to be interesting for India with all the summits planned.

Default Gujarat Police to ride Harley-Davidsons

I have been praising Guj Govt work in many areas but this one I simply cannot digest.

I'm sure someone wanted to ride Harley so bad that the department pulled the strings. This is pure waste of our tax money.

They must be using RE for piloting duties and some big Bajaj/TVS for chasing goons. I really believe that an automotive chase truly depends on the ability of the driver and not on the automobile.

At loss of words. Dejected..

Wow why a Street 750? Do they aim to catch those speeding young turks with this?
This reminds me of the decision by Karnataka Police who had bought 350 RD 350 BIkes for their stable. We all know the wretched lives that these bikes had to live before being sold/disposed off as scrap.

Hope we see better utilization of funds than these show off.

Living in Gujarat and having access to the newspapers here, I just read an article in the TOI yesterday about this. The article mentioned that there are 20 Motorcycles in total comprising of 7 Harley's and the other 13 being a combination of Triumph's and Hyosung's. The Govenment looked at BMW too, but found their bikes too pricey! Austerity finally.

Sources in the Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar said technical committee had reviewed super bikes of four companies, Harley Davidson, BMW, Hyo Sung a bike manufactured by a South Korean Company and Triumph, a bike made by a British company. "The price range of BMW was high and hence we zeroed in on Harley Davidson for now. For the next lot we could take into consideration super bikes of other companies as suggested by the Technical committee," said police officials.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/45671534.cms

The Harley's are already delivered because they could equip their bikes with the special colour/police accessories the Government wanted. The others could not deliver their bikes (in the modified condition) in time but they will be delivered after the Vibrant Gujarat Summit ends.

On a seperate note, as also reported in the article- the Ahmedabad police was given about 75 Pulsar 220-F's which the cops could not control while chasing down criminals and chain-snatchers and unfortunately had quite a few accidents. I suspect it was not due to the excess power but because they were not used to the front and rear disc brakes (considering they graduated straight from the zero disc brake Splendor's and Passion's). Now the thought of them having superbikes is terrifying to say the least.
