Hero MotorCorp vs Honda

By the way Hero's graph is decreasing and Honda's is increasing, it would be soon where they'll each other may be by early next year or so.

Observations that I can gather from the Figures and Charts

  • September and October are the two months that witness the highest sales for most two wheeler companies. An increase of 13.31% over the last month and total sales of 2.19 lakh units makes this the highest two-wheeler selling month so far in this year.

  • As usual top 3 level performers for this month are Activa, Splendor and HF Deluxe.

  • The Top 20 sellers are dominated by Hero’s entries with 6 in number followed by 5 from Honda, 3 from Bajaj and TVS and last but not the least with 1 entry each from Royal Enfield, Suzuki and Yamaha.

  • Of the Top 20 sales, 16 entries belong to 100-125 cc segments which consist of both scooters and motorcycles. It is easy to guess the major share contributors in this list.

  • M-o-M sales record breaker – Honda Activa has done it again this month too with 3.01 lakh units. This is one scooter that puzzles me every time I see the sales figures. What is it that Honda does to attract customers to their dealership!!

  • Royal Enfield and Yamaha are selling steadily month-on-month as seen in the chart (Top 6 Sales) but sadly occupy the lower part of the graph. Bajaj and TVS seem to be in the same range in the graph but I expect Bajaj to overtake TVS in the coming months.

  • Still holding the lead in Market share of 35.02% whereas Honda having 28.86%, Honda’s share has increased slight from 28.27% whereas Hero’s has decreased from 36.49%. With TVS in 3rd position at 13.58% loosing almost 1% share compared to the last month and Bajaj in 4th at 12.53%, gaining almost 2% compared to the last month.

  • Honda has 2 main star performers viz., Activa and CB Shine in this month with a jump in sales of approximately 20,000 and 28,000 units respectively.

Thanks for the analysis.

Key Observations.

1. Festive months will see a huge blip in sales.
2. The growth primarily is from the 150-180 cc segment. From November 2015 to September 2016. Sales have almost doubled. Affordable 150cc bikes are driving this growth.
3. Close to 80000 mopeds from TVS is remarkable even in this age of modern motorcycles. RTR sales would be better if TVS manages to deliver more 200s, but they seem not so interested in it for the reasons best known to them.
4. Bajaj V variants are driving good volumes for Bajaj.
5. Motorcycles have grown 37% and Scooters 50% over September 2015. With more variants of scooters, it will continue to see a steady growth.

Royal Enfield at 57k units for September.
Compare this with the paltry 4-5k units they used to sell during early 2000.

TVS Mopeds at 80k mopeds is probably due to the transition from 2 stroke to 4 stroke for the TVS XL which as it is was a high seller.

For all the hype it generated, looks like the Himalayan hasn't converted that to actual sales. Or is 1000 - 1400 units par for the course?

Cheers,
Vikram

All because of the Classic 350 model..

The Classic 350 model was a big stroke of luck for the company

This changeover room 2 stroke to 4 stroke made the TVS XL reachable to ones needing in the Metropolitan cities where the 2 stroke ones weren't allowed to register.

Couple of issues seen in the sheets -

  • Karizma has two variants at different prices, should be split right ?
  • Bajaj lists KTM Duke125 which is not sold in India (hence the 0 sales), should be removed
  • Pulsar 180 and 200NS are different genre's and prices, should be separated?
  • Avenger is 220cc not 200
  • Kawasaki numbers are duplicated in Bajaj and Kawasaki.
  • Kawasaki Ninja250 has been out of sale for a while now, how is it showing up?
  • Kawasaki Z800 and ZX10R very different bikes and different prices, should be separated?
  • Same for Kawasaki Z1000 and ZX14R, should be separated?
  • Kawasaki Versys 650 and 1000 missing from the list?
  • Suzuki Inazuma has been discontinued, should be moved out of the list
  • Triumph Tiger XC stopped selling as well
  • TVS Apache has variants, has it all been clubbed?

Data to SIAM is provided by manufacturers based on the Categories (based on Engine CC) as defined by SIAM

Hence

  • Same for Kawasaki Z1000 and ZX14R, should be separated?

Categories for Motorcycles as defined by SIAM:

1. (75 - 110) cc
2. (110 -125) cc
3. (125 - 150) cc
4. (150 - 200) cc
5. (200 - 250) cc
6. (250 - 350) cc
7. (350 -500) cc
8. (500 - 800) cc
9. (800-1000)cc
10. (1000 - 1600) cc
11. (>1600 cc)

Now manufacturers provide their data of the models that fall under the respective categories.. few manufacturers provide break up of models and some don't and just keep it according to the categories defined.

Some other example of models that fall under a common "CC" category, therefore are CLUBBED together in SIAM reports

1. Glamour + Super Splendor
2. Apache 160+ Apache 180+ Apache 200
3. Pulsar 180 + Pulsar 200 (AS+NS+RS)
4. Dream Yuga + CD110 Dream + Dream Neo
5. All Splendor variants
6. All Activa variants

Its because of that reason why the above mentioned models are CLUBBED and can't be Split at will because that's how the data is provided/published.

Its NOT Duplicated

Kawasaki models that are billed to Bajaj for sale across its KTM showrooms show up against Bajaj

Models that are billed to IKM (India Kawasaki Motors) for sale across the exclusive Kawasaki dealerships show up against Kawasaki.

That I guess is the Z250... name not registered/published accurately by SIAM
