This is good news but I feel the catch will be whooping import duty after all govt. wants to earn from all luxuries.

Wasn't the import open anyways? However, the interesting bit is that this is now an option for manufacturers to bring in bikes without going through the ridiculous homologation process!

Could the long wait finally be over?

Per the Business Standard the landed cost of Harleys would be between 6.7 - 19.35 L, Hayabusa 1300 @ 10.68L and Yamaha V-Max 13.63L.

The duties are more than 100%.

This bike costs as much as a Merc

So basically this means that the same bike which today sells for about 9 lakhs but with TR papers would cost the same, but would be legally in the name of the owner. The effect of this would mean that the price of these TR bikes should fall a bit. However, it could take some time for this effect to be felt.

Too bad that they don't allow 600cc bikes though.

LOL....The lowest cc Harley is a 883 so we know the mangoes for Harley's is true. We should have kept the mangoes.

There could have been a bigger market for the 400 and 600.

The wait for the R6 continues.

I would rather pay that extra lac and have the bike with proper registration and papers.. infact many potential buyers will opt for this option and the TR bikes should have a considerable drop in prices

Actually its a give and take. In return the US govt will allow the import of Indian mangoes that was not permitted for whatever reasons (pesticides maybe).

The govt feels that given the high cost of these bikes, coupled with the prevaliling duties, there wont be many takers anyways, so its not a loss for them or the local motorcycle industry.

Not before this, all the superbikes in India are illegal. Simply due to the fact they can’t pass stringent emission norms and without homologation process they can’t be registered legally.

Finally there will be legal import of superbikes in India.

Though something tells me that there are a few hidden twists to this ..which we will only figure out when one of us does go and imports a SBK !!!
