| Hi all I am living in Australia, and planning to settle back in INDIA in next 2 years. I used to drive Suzuki SAMURAI during 1997 … I loved my Bike rides and miss it a lot I have some basic questions I am aware that Indian market got 220cc bikes (Pulsar) but I am not happy with the look of the bike (Its not macho) I am looking for a bike that is macho (similar to Honda CBR929 Fireblade 2000) The bike is purely for Fun riding (may be weekend riding) I am hopeless when it comes to servicing the bikes… So when it comes to servicing all I can do is to take it to service centre.. So need a bike that can be serviced without much fuss I will be moving back to Chennai … My Budget is 2.5 – 3 Lakhs (A$ 8000),inclusive of Tax to get into India I am looking at experts to help me in deciding the bike that may fit into above list How hard is it in Customs to clear the bike ( I think for used bike its 80% tax but is it true even if I claim “Transfer of Residence”) ?? Your help is highly appreciated ![]() Last edited by Samurai : 10th October 2007 at 12:00. |

| BHPian | You are moving after 2 years from now ? , then for time being forget it . Bcos we will be seen big bikes off the self in another 6months (hope so) .I am sure in another 2 years we can buy a super bike right here in INDIA. Buy something there big ,ride it ,sell it and pick up something new here itself.

you could also consider buying a second hand bike here instead of bringing a bike from australia. you would end up spending alot to clear the bike and it would make more sense to buy one here.

| BHPian | Hi, The process and cost of getting a bike cleared is as follows: 1) Make sure that you have owned the bike for atleast one year before you get it. If the bike is of a later model year than the year that it was initially registered in, make sure that you have a paper trail - makes a significant difference in duty if you get one additional year or depreciaiton 2) Get hold of a clearing agent that will do the running around and bribing of the customs folks. In case of TR you will have one of these guys to clear your container anyway. Try to get this guy before you ship your container as you can avoid about 5-10k of fine/penalty if they intimate the customs dept in advance. This agent is bound to charge 40-50k as this covers all the palm greasing that needs to be done to release the bike 3) The appraising officer in customs use the black book - (in the lines of blue book that gives residual value of vehicles). The black book has the manufacturer quoted MSRP of all motorcycles sold in the USA for the last 15 years. They apply a trade discount of 15% to the MSRP. This number is then depreciated using the following table: (i) For every quarter during 1st year - 4% (ii) For every quarter during 2nd year - 3% (iii) For every quarter during 3rd year - 2.5% (iv) For every quarter during 4th year - and thereafter 2% subject to a maximum depreciation of 70% This translates to Year 1 - 16% Year 2 - 12% Year 3 - 10% Year 4 - 08% Year 5 - 08% Year 6 - 08% Year 7 - 08% Year 8 onwards - 00% My 2002 Honda CB919 had an MSRP of $7999 in 2002. Residual Value MSRP in 2002 7999 7999.00 Trade Discount % 15% 1199.85 6799.15 Year 1 16% 1087.864 5711.29 Year 2 12% 815.898 4895.39 Year 3 10% 679.915 4215.47 Year 4 8% 543.932 3671.54 Year 5 8% 543.932 3127.61 Year 6 8% 543.932 2583.68 Final Residual Value 2583.68 Final Appraised Value = 101% of Final Residual Value 2609.51 Shipping and Insurance Cost 180.15 Total Dutiable value 2789.67 Duty @ 149% 149% 4156.604292 Duty in INR @ 40.5 INR/$ 168342.4738 Hope this Helps.. |

Looks like you really got a great deal on shipping cost. What I am wondering is...how much would an identical '92 919 cost if you bought it in India. (if you can find one that is)

| Senior - BHPian | Mpower, there was no 919 in 92, the 9191 came in sometime in the late 90s, it was the 900 rr in 1993 with two round headlamps (like the 400rr). Anyways, a 900 rr, 93-94 spec would be around 3L in India, and a 919 97-98-99 spec would be around 4L manson.
