As far as sane everyday rides go, the 2008 Suzuki Hayabusa, the Kawasaki ZX-14 and most of the liter class machines are all electronically restricted to 186 mph limit. Removing the limiter is not difficult, but reliable data with regards to top speeds of these bikes without the limiter is difficult to procure.

In the insane production category, the MTT Y2K is the fastest production bike in the world (according to Guiness Book). It has a tested top whack of 250 mph+ and will go from 0-200 mph under 15 seconds.

In Landspeed records category, the record is held by a motorcycle called the BUB's Seven ridden by an American dirt-track champion Chris Karr. It did an average run of 350 mph in September 2006.

It features a purpose designed and engineered V-Four cylinder turbo charged 16 valve liquid cooled double overhead cam motor that displaces 3 L and produces close to 500 bhp via a custom designed and made monocoque carbon fiber and Kevlar construction chassis.

As it turns out, the Tomahawk's top speed is just theoretical and based on horsepower calculations. When Dodge first came out with publicity about the tomahawk, they claimed a 420 mph top speed and then changed its claim to 300+ mph . At speeds of over 200 mph, air resistance becomes a major factor that prevents faster speeds, including the ability of the rider to hold on. Many people have expressed doubts about the claim saying that it is not enough to have all the horsepower without being able to use them

The Tomahawk has not been tested for top whack, neither it is a production bike. So it cannot qualify for the fastest thing on 2 wheels in any category. In fact, I think the Tomahawk cannot be classified as a motorcycle at all, given the fact it has four wheels.

I think the Kawasaki ZZR-14 did take over the top spot for the fastest bike. The 2008 Busa was supposed to have received some tweaking to be able to hit the 300kmph mark a tab bit faster than the ZZR-14.

I guess all you guys are wronggggg !! Tomahawk isnt in production. Its just a STUPID concept with zero maneuverability. Have you guys heard of the Y2k turbine? Its made by MTT (Marine Turbine Technologies) and Mr. Jay Leno who's known for his huge garage full of goodies has a special hangar made just for this one !
Here's the top speed 227mph = 367~kmph. Gone with the wind are "BUSA" and "ZX-14" or whatever else.

THe tomahawk is not even a motorcycle. it cannot lean over, and it cannot turn except at less than walking pace. Its never gone anywhere near the claimed speeds.

The Turbinebike is a joke too. Gas turbines are unsuitable for road use because they have RPM dependent compression, which means, they are very poorly suited to operation that needs rpm to go up and down quickly. As alluded to, this means, they have to spool up and down and take forever to do it.

There are 230mph turbocharged Hayabusas and ZX-11s (yes, 11s!) that are hugely more suitable to road use than this turbine bike. its 286whp for a $200,000 bike is downright laughable. modestly turbocharged Hayabusas and ZX12s do 300hp at $17,000, including motorcycle.

I am also quite skeptical of the idea of "series production" for the MTT, regardless of what the Guiness book says.

PS. I say that I am skeptical of "series production" because I know there is no assembly line for these bikes. its engine is second hand that has run so much that it can no longer be used for aviation without being rebuilt, the bike has not passed noise and emissions regulations so it can't even be compared to other bikes for which "stock" means "as found on showroom floor, incompliance with all regulations". There is no series assembly line, they are built to order.

The fastest production bikes were the 1999/2000 Kawasaki ZX12R and the Hayabusa. Which of the two it was is not clear. The highest speed for the Hayabusa was 194mph, radar clocked, but it was on a one way run. the highest figure for the ZX-12R is 192mph, but this was a two way run, allowing for wind and road slope difference. After '00, both were restricted to 186mph.

I would say that it is fair to recognize both the ZX12R and first generation Hayabusa as the fastest series production bikes that have been sold to the public. THe new ZX-14 and Hayabusa 1340 would surely be capable of going faster, but not off the showroom floor.

The new Versys Kawasaki has unveiled the first of its 2007 models, a rangy, middleweight all-rounder it calls the Versys (from "versatile system" or some such nonsense).

The bike looks very promising. The motor is essentially the same punchy 649cc parallel twin that debuted in the ER-6 a year ago and the styling shares that bike's complex curves. But the important difference is the high-set riding position and long-travel suspension, which should help the Versys to be agile with a sporting bias for a wide range of road conditions, Ducati Multistrada style. We're looking forward to riding this one.

But there is one sector, arguably the highest profile of them all, that Kawasaki once made its own: the world's fastest production bike. In the mid-1970s, Honda was more Austin-Morris to Kawasaki's Austin Powers, with the groovy Z1 out-glamming the more pioneering but sensible CB750 and out-blasting everything else with its 135mph top speed.
Once started, it quickly became a tradition, with various Z1000s, GPZ1100s, the GPZ1000RX, ZX-10 and the unassailable ZZ-R1100 successively holding the "world's fastest" mantle. Then came the Honda Blackbird and Suzuki's Hayabusa, and the ZZ-R faded - a very fast, but no longer the fastest, bike. The ball had been dropped, until the arrival of Morita-san.
