@bblost : i think you have GPR helmet with a smoke visor right? Any idea on where do get the visor in hyderabad?
it's gone one year and scratches have developed due to all the small stones and etc, hitting it. I usually clean my helmet with cold water including the visor and wipe it with a microfibre cloth.

If the helmet liner is not removable it's a bit difficult. First find a big bucket or basin large enough to swallow the whole helmet (remove the visor). Then soak the helmet in there, using least quantity of very mild detergent, for couple of hours. Then rinse it, as much as it takes to remove the traces of detergent. Hang dry it and then later sun dry it.

I've tried the latter for an AGV (import) with non removable liners without any harm.

Does'nt soaking the helmet in water ruin the helmets with vents, metal mesh, metal hinges?
How do you manage the drying process?
Upside down in the sun? how long does it usually take to dry
What about the sponge on repeated wash like this?
I use a wet cloth to wipe the inside.
Anyways my helmet liners are removable, should do the detergent wash when I do the longish rides.
The tough part is cleaning the visor insides.

Surf Excel Hai na !!!
If the liners are removable, wash them by hand with normal detergent. For the shell, visor and other non-removable parts, wash them with a mild solution. and let it dry. For the inner liners, preferably dry it in the shade.

The method suggested by shankar works best. and summers are the best time to do it. and try soaking in warm water, helps to loosen all the dust, grime, oil (hair cream) etc.

but make sure u dry it absolutely...and while keeping in the terrace, keep a cloth or newspaper below the helmet so that the concrete doesn leave any scratches.

good sunlight and heat also brings a certain freshness to the helmet plus the foam is loosened - just like how we keep our mattresses and pillows in the sunlight...

Most helmets today such as the LS2 are equipped with removable and washable cheek pads and liners.

Just remove them and soak them in warm water to which a mild detergent (shampoo also works well) has been added. Do not wring them after rinsing but drip dry them in the shade. Dont dry them in a dryer also.

To clean the outer shell of the helmet use a microfiber cloth which is mildly wet and wipe the shell. You can apply a thin layer/coat of wax on the shell to protect it from scratches.

Would it be ok to apply Wax Polish - on the Visor?
( I have the Formula1 brand - the one with yellow round box )
I have a clear visor and would like it to be easy to wipe and dirt/water repulsive as much possible.

Thanks,

Ace.

EDIT: googled - and found that 'Hand sanitizers' work well too! - for on the go-type-cleaning.
Sanitizer+tissue cleans and the remainder vaporizes without any traces.
Anybody tried this?

Never use any kind of polish on the visor. It will be a nightmare to ride in the night since it will disperse light from oncoming vehicles.

Use plain water and a mild shampoo to wash any dirt/insect debris away and dry with a microfiber cloth of soft hand tissue.

Hand sanitizers contain alcohol which will cause the material in the visor to breakdown. This could make the visor break/shatter more easily.

^^^I often use F1 dashboard cleaner to clean the visor. I find that it stays cleaner and clearer for longer. Good for night time driving. I'm using F1 cleaner only because I have it in stock. Others may do an even better job.

I do use wax on the visor, or rather used to, since I haven't for a very long now, and I find it does help a little, but it's minimal and the waxy smoothness doesn't last much anyway.

I've found Colin and tissue to be very effective on the visor. It keeps away dust, and water droplets slide off. No need to even run your glove over the visor. Still no solution to the dirt on the matte-finish of the helmet though.

Cheers,
Rahul

Most reputed helmet manufacturer's include some amount of literature on how to clean and maintain the helmet. I recollect that my LS2 and SparX cleaning instructions only mention plain water and mild soap to clean the helmet and its related parts.

Some links below that might be of use :

How to Care for Motorcycle Helmet Visors | eHow.com

SHOEI North America | Safety-Sizing, Handling, And Care

Visor Care | KBC Helmets

Please avoid using wax on the visor as it could distort vision in the night and cause a potentially dangerous situation.

Ride safe

Thanks Aditya-
In fact yesterday after you posted I did look up the eHow link and a couple of videos on youtube.

only thing that they suggest other than plain-cold-water-wash is "Rainex"
-which seems to be a visor/windsheild specific product to repel water.

I will stay safe- and Just use water+tissue!

Appreciate the prompt inputs guys!

Ace.

I don't know if the cleaner contains any wax. Anyway, its ment for use on plastics and vinyl, etc. So quite unlikely to cause any damage. I'v been using it for years and if anything it improves visibility.

I wouldn't use tissue paper if I were you. Its likely to case micro scratches on plastic. Will lead to opacity in time. Rainex seems to be a good idea, but its ment for use on glass. Can't say if it may cause some reaction on the plastic in the long run.

To clean the visor -

* If out riding
  1. Carry wet tissues, sprinkle a bit of water and dislodge them
  1. Best would be to use hand sanitizer to dislodge them coupled with the wet tissue.

* At home
  1. In a bucket, fill water to the point where your visor will be sub-merged. Add mild shampoo & stir it. Let it remain soaked in for at least an hour. Dislodges bugs like no body's business
