I'm in USA, but will be coming back to India on ToR on or before 11/22/2010.
I had a chance to talk to one of the harley dealers in India.
It was indeed a pleasant experience to talk with that person.

What he had to tell me was that "Any motorcycle if not purchased thru HD india they will not touch it" It seems this is not a rule by HD but it's by our Indian govt which has set it up.

I really dont understand paying after so much duty and taxes to bring it along with me & still I cannot get a service then what the heck the govt is upto?
BTW why on earth is the govt putting all these weird rules/regulations..

I remember a very good saying: In India the government tries to prevent anything & everything except CORRUPTION.....

Now I'm left in a deep dilemma..Is there someone who can do regular maintenance/service for my HD Dyna that i'm planning to bring it along with me to India or I'm better off setting down in Canada/australia/malaysia or anyother country where there is a HD dealership and where I can get it serviced

Any suggestions in this regard is much appreciated

Does this mean that the Govt will appoint someone who will monitor each and every bike coming in for service. :)

I think the dealer is taking you for a ride.

As far as my knowledge goes, the only difference between the US & Indian version is the controlled emission norms in decibles. Otherwise all of them are the same. The dealers may initially refuse to service the US made motorcycles, but on close rapport they WILL service it. This is Indiya!!!

To the best of my knowledge, you will be able to get your Dyna serviced in India with any dealer. If not, please note that there are quite a few bike mechs in most metros who handle multiple imported brands and they will be able to procure spares as well from the local HD dealer.

Dont worry too much, it is possible here.

There was a half page ad in the TOI a few days back stating that they will not service any bikes that are not bought through HD dealers. But I think its just to curb any illegal / grey market imports rather than exceptions like you who are getting your rides through TOR. Plus HD dealerships are owned by enthusiasts who will surely understand your problem and surely help you. :)

Shrini,

Only thing you ensure before hand is if there is any restrictions on the registartion if the bike is not meeting the Euro 3 or 4 emission standards.
Otherwise I think HD can be serviced by the many competent and imported bike specialists in Metro Cities in India. I am sure HD dealers themselves will come around soon enough (if non service of grey market imports and ToR Imports is their official policy)

I think you should also take it up with HD USA and see what their line is, on this issue

Best Regards and Drive/Ride Safe

Ram

The Govt. does not prevent any dealer from providing service to any customers, irrespective of the channel that he has brought it from.

It is only a gimmick by the Dealer to avoid future headaches like warranty, etc., not to mention the sale profit he loses.

This is quite true! :Frustrati

Why don't you try finding another dealer who can oblige you?

Try finding them at Harley-Davidson India - Dealer Interest

Or better still, email them at: rideindia@harleydavidson.com

Just thought of another option; since you're in US, it will be easy to reach out one of the top guy in HD or may be even Matt Levatich. Show your proof of purchase from HD dealership in US & I'm sure they will accept as they value their customers more than anything.

As I mentioned in the post, it's not HD India setting up all these rules.

The HD dealer told me that since there are lot of illegal bikes imported in India and government is doing a crackdown on the bikes, hence the Indian government which has made the rule "stating bikes that wasnt purchased thru HD dealership in India will not/should not be touched by the dealer"

This is what is really driving me nuts...:Frustrati

The dealer told me that there was an article which was also posted on TOI some days back regarding this...
Since I know HD, they dont wanna do quick buck doing something under the table, so if the rule stays then probably by all means then HD will not be touching it

I dont know about the Euor 3/4 emission standards...coz the bike was purchased in USA and I really doubt if they will meet that standards...
I remember fellow BHPian ridin a 1200XL and his fuel rating is 95+ octane which is Euro and I still ride a 91+ octane in US
