+1 to that.

I have got work done on my Getz at Oberoi and the guy does a great job. Changed my entire front suspension for half the cost that *** quoted. Genuine OEM parts used and car was kept for just about 2 days.

I recommended another friend to take his Skoda there and he too is a fan.

Well what can i say! I have been recommending this workshop to many on tbhp for suspension, clutch, brakes and PS related jobs and all seem to be happy.

He has recently hired a new senior guy (Dubai return) for all the AC and electricals related jobs.

The advantage i have is that i live in the immediate next building and have known the guy for many many years now. (let me know if anyone is visiting him, we can have a mini tbhp meet..lol)

Best part is that he is open on Sundays and as rightly advised....its better to take an appointment before hand.

I got influenced by the recommendations about this guy from this directory and I went ahead with it.
My Verna (CRDI 2008) had suspension issues since 2 months. My local mechanic suggested few things and gave me budget of 30k. I did not go to A.S.S as it would cost me a bomb. So I decided to go ahead with Oberoi and I am not at all happy with the experience. I dont know if it is just one off incident but I am entitled to comment and this is not to malign anyones reputation.

In short:
I was given a quote of 15k and 2 days of work, so I asked him to go ahead with it. Next day he said that now that he has OPENED the car, he has found out that the expense ll be around 25k and he ll take 2 days more. After another 2 days he told me that he ll take another 2 days and expenses ll be 35k.Finally when I went to pick up my car after 8 days, I was shocked to see that car was soaking wet from inside. I have no idea how that happened. Car was stinking and I had to take it to 3M care for germclean or whatever the name was to get this thing rectified.

While taking test drive with the guy I asked him as to whether I should change tyres as due to bad suspensions they were worn out.I was running on XM1+ and he suggested me that best tyres ll be MRF. I just kept quiet!Nothing against MRF but hope you get my point here.

After one month of driving my car, I went to top up my nitrogen pressure in tyres and tyrewala told me that one of your michelins is replaced by a bridgestone. I was shocked. Yes, it is my mistake that I should have checked it at the mechanic while paying him but then who remembers all this everytime.

I can narrate the entire story but I do think this is quite sufficient to give my opinion. I ll never give my car to this guy again even if he is certified by FIA!

This is my short version and to best of my english vocab.

I too did not have a good experience with Oberai. I had given my Elantra for Front suspension check-up as there was some noise and the suspension had 7-8 years old bushings. He asked me to leave the car and he would give a quote after opening the suspension. He called me after 2 days and said about 10k for basic work. Then after 2 days I call him to ask if the car is ready. He says there are some more problems and the cost will now land up in 20k range!

Also when ever I called him to ask of the car is done, he would keep adding days or two. Finally when I went to collect my car, I saw my car was complete covered with bird pooh. The blue car was had now become a polka-dot design with huge number of white spots. Also he had put grease on all sort of places like radiator mount, bonnet and boot stoppers, side fender bolts, etc. to reduce rattles. The whole car was so messy that anywhere you put your hand, your hand would land up in grease. Also the steering wheel was completely soiled with grease, etc.

To top it all, I was never given a proper bill at the end. The whole cost went upto 23K. I asked him to reduce. He shuffled and jumbled the pricing of components with no basis. Lower arms in previous calculation were 4700, this time they became 4850, and instead he dropped the price for some other components.

So for me it was a shabby work, no proper tools/facility, extremely unprofessional behaviour and an awfully expensive affair.

Even I had a very poor experience when I took my car to Oberai a couple of years ago. I getting some caliper noise on bumpy paver blocked roads in my 1.5 year old Beat. At the time I couldnt diagnose the reason for the noise as the tip to check for it by hitting the rims with your fist didnt work.
I did not want to take it to the A.S.S. and had recently seen the review for Oberai, so I decided to take the car there.
I told him about the noise and we went for a test drive straight away. I mentioned that he was recommended by TBHP and also while chatting it turned out that he used to have his earlier workshop in Santacruz right next to my old 'family car mechanic' Wilson's place.
During the test drive he would repeatedly sound the horn by kiving it Karate Chops !!
He would also suddenly step hard on the accelerator and wit a rough turn switch off the engine, then turn his head sideways with his ear facing forward to listen for the sound not even caring if we run someone over or have an accident !

I tolerated all this because he was recommended, etc and I had a road trip coming up and was worried about the suspension.

We returned to the workshop and he asked his guys to open up both suspensions for him to check. While they were working he would hit both his guys on the head and insult and abuse them.

After opening up the suspension he just randomly picked up a part and said Ya Ya look here both the lower swing arms and ball joints are totally screwed up due to bad roads, poor quality etc and I will replace them in 2 days for 9000 bucks each, all the while waving around the part he had in his hand and asking for the keys and 5000 bucks upfront

I smelt something fishy and nevertheless hated his attitude and the way he treated his staff. Obviously, I had to think of a way to escape tactfully since my car was on stands with both front suspensions opened up.

I told him my Uncle owns a used car showroom and I would take the car to him to show what parts are needed and he will remove them from another customers car for me so give me a quote for just the labour. This shady suggestion seemed to make him happy and he said it was a great idea and he will only charge me only Rs 8000 for labor if I get him the spares !
I also told him that I will get the car back on the weekend as I was not expecting such a major job that would take a few days and I needed the car to go to several meetings.
At this he started grumbling that it was too late (5pm) and to come back in the morning. I flatly refused and insisted that he do it immediately. He agreed but I would have to pay him 1000 bucks labour to put it back together ! Not having any other option to get my car out I bargained and we settled on Rs 750 and his boys started the reassembly, all the while getting smacks to the head and insults from him.
Paid him his 750 and a tip to each of the boys who I felt realy bad for and got out of there.
The funny thing is on the way back I realised the opening and tightening had made the sound disappear ! It came back in a couple of months but was correctly diagnosed and fixed by the A.S.S. for a couple of hundred bucks by greasing and wrapping the caliper pins in teflon tape.

I highly recommend that you guys AVOID OBERAI SUSPENSION

9000 with parts and 8000 labor if you get parts.

This shows he was randomly telling you any amount which came to his mind. Total blood sucker, typical garage guy.

I feel good you escaped with just paying 750 even though that was too much but who knows what all he would have swapped from your car apart from actually not putting anything new.

Thanks!

I have not paid a visit to this guy but guys suspension overhaul is such a minor thing, it's better that you get it done with someone you know and trust.

Suspension and steering noises in a fairly well maintained car are due to:

1) Strut Bush wearing out
2)Stabilizer bars wearing out
3) Play and damper adjustment in the steering

And mostly caliper noise can be a mirage which can be falsely diagnosed as suspension noise. Do your research on what it could be and hit the nail on the head when you go to the ASS. Most of the time not everything needs changing and a couple of thousand bucks will get you another 30 to 40 thousand kilometers out of the suspension/steering.

I highly recommend that you guys AVOID OBERAI SUSPENSION
Retorquing the suspension fasteners sometimes helps
It s a very sad experience that you had. Thanks for letting us know though, now we know whom to avoid.

To disgnose if the control arms and/ or the ball joints have gone bust, you neednt remove the front suspension.
You can just jack the car up and see the play of the tire. You can move the tire along X, Y and Z axis. If there is play, you know that you have to replace something.
Only if the noise cant be diagnosed in this way should the suspension be removed..

Im glad you go away from this crook

Yup, I was lucky to get away from there relatively unscathed. The only reason I went there was due to the recommendation here and also I was worried about getting a steep bill from the service center, thinking that they might consider it regular wear and tear or accidental damage from potholes.
My research did lead me to believe that it was a caliper problem but I could not test it out by hitting the wheels with my fist.
Actually when I went to the service center a couple of months later I had problems recreating the sound when I went for a test drive with the SA and mechanic because the retorquing had reduced the sound greatly and I would only get it on paver block roads. Luckily I managed to find a rough patch and recreated the noise and both of them immediately said its from the calipers and they rectified it for around 3-400 bucks only.
