What we do in manual transmission to rev-match engine speed while down shifting, Heel-toe action, which is taken care in this DSG DQ200 automatically.

Well, not sure I actually do that in my MT car. I downshift either because I am slowing down routinely or for engine braking - in either case I don't press the accelerator at all.

In my GT, over last 2.5 years and 26000km, I have been observing that the DSG has a bug - if I am in D3 and I brake to slow down(e.g. approaching a speed breaker), it downshifts to D2, but engine tries rev up fighting the brake. Are you experiencing this by chance? IMO, this is clearly a bug. If accelerator is released and brake is pressed, DSG should simply downshift at appropriate point as the speed reduces (which it does) and then it should just maintain minimum revs in D2 (to prevent stalling) or downshift to D1 if required. It should not rev up in D2 until brake is released. They MUST fix this bug.

Friends, I am planning to buy Octavia, but confused between 1.8tsi and 2.0 TDI. My monthly running is on an average of 500+ kms with once or twice long drives of 1200kms in an year. Suggestions from experts are welcome. Also I would like to know the average mileage you are getting for both.

Thanks in advance!

2.0 TDI will be lighter on your pocket and provide good performance too, 1.8 TSI will provide explosive performance but will make a huge dent in your pocket, 2.0 TDI will give you a realistic 10-11 kpl in the city and on highways 15 + Easily, Don't expect 1.8 TSI to give anything more than 8-9 kpl in the city and on highways too won't be able to match what the TDI can deliver, In short going for the TDI is a more practical decision, 1.8 TSI is more of a decision made by your heart.

+1 to Tanveer.

2.0TDI is the more practical of the two which will give you good performance, good fuel economy and also comes with the wet clutch 6 speed DQ250 gearbox which is much more reliable than the DQ200 in the 1.8TSi. One drawback with the 2.0TDi is the sub-par torsion beam suspension.

On the other hand, the 1.8TSi will give you explosive performance and has the multi link suspension that gives you a superior ride quality. However, the 7 speed dry clutch DQ200 gearbox has its reliability issues - fellow members adi_petrolhead and docsr have had problems with the gearbox. Check out the below threads.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-d...speed-dsg.html

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techni...ing-issue.html (Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSi DSG - Shuddering issue!)

Having said that, if you are prepared for the risk with DQ200, there is no other car in this segment that can beat the explosive performance of the 1.8TSi.

For your running, a petrol makes far more sense. The diesel costs more, and has an inferior suspension. Plus you run the risk of having to scrap it after 10 years vs 15 years for Petrols. I suspect the break even point for buying a diesel is over 15000 km per annum today. Yes, the DQ 200 will fail but Skoda repairs it for free

Based on the running you mentioned you won't cover more than 40 thousand kilometers in a five year span. Comparing the price difference of 2.0 TDI to 1.8 TSI you won't break even in that time span. The inferior suspension of 2.0 TDI is another dampener. Took a TD of 2.0 TDI and came back dejected by the ride quality.
On other hand 1.8 TSI has superior multi link suspension and the performance is unmatched. I am getting a fuel economy of around 10 to 11 in city and believe me ,that's at par or better than my Brio AT . Yet to do a highway run hence can't commend about that.
There are questions regarding reliability of dry clutch but an extended warranty of two more years should take care of that. I am not sure which insurance your dealer will be offering. I took reliance motor secure premium which has engine and gear box protect which should give you peace of mind for one more extra year.

While running costs would be definitely lower for the diesel, by a significant margin, it won't make a big dent in your case because of the very low running. It will hardly be 3k INR per month and even that is the worst case scenario. Service costs will be higher for the diesel and so will be the initial investment, like everyone said. Please do consider that the resale of a diesel will be better too and a major chunk of your extra initial investment (for the diesel) will be recovered during resale. So if you are planning to keep the car for 4-5 years, diesel might be the better buy. But if you wan to enjoy the Octavia, TSI is the way to go.

Octavia 2.0 TDI MT 0-100 - 8.84 secs
Octavia 1.8 TSI 0-100 - 8.01 secs
Octavia TDI MT FE - 20.6 kmpl
Octavia 1.8 TSI - 14.2 kmpl ( with a relatively light foot - will go down to even 8 kmpl if you drive it the way it is to be driven)

The suspension of the TDI gives it far better straight line stability.

Frankly, it's a no brainer unless you're looking at sun roofs more than the car.

Oh yes how can i forget about the torsion suspension in the TDI, I did feel a good amount of difference after driving the octavia TDI and jetta Tdi back to back, I was not gentle to the car though. Maybe he should test drive the jetta tdi too perhaps?..

Friends 1.8 TSI Vrs MT doesn't give him anything more than 8-9 in the city, goes up til 12-13 kpl on the highways, Doubt AT would be any better, Specially in the city.

Absolutely. Purely from the driving experience, Jetta TDi is definitely an option. What Jetta lacks is the fresher look and equipment (AFS II, Sunroof, better HU etc).
