As per Ford USA website, the Detroit MSRP for a Mustang 5.0L GT Fastback 6 Speed Auto is USD 34,740. This even includes the USD 900 transportation charge to the dealer. Add 110% duty to this figure and its USD 71,400 or INR 47,83,800. Ex-showroom price in India is INR 65,00,000.

for one what we get here is expensive, second custom Duties in India on Imports are more like 200 %, here's an old calculation I did for Toyota Land-Cruiser, do check Toyota India website for LC prices here and then you will realise how fair FORD has been in pricing this car. After duties add 2 % CST ( Central Sales Tax ) that's applicable on sales to Dealer from FORD Factory & then 12,5 % VAT which is included in FORD prices here. Unlike overseas Sales Tax is mostly inclusive on listed MRP here.

If we check the assessable value of prices at what FORD got from the USA, its about 25000 USD which is way cheaper at what FORD sells in the US. I don't think anyone is making any big money here and won't be surprised that their dealer margins are less than Endeavour.

All in all great efforts by FORD India to launch such niche product and hope Indian market matures in future to explore CKD imports or perhaps manufacture here for exports to right-hand market.

I'm kind of lost because IMO Ford has lost excellent opportunity to outsell the competition in the long run and bring the GT350R/GT as the high priced halo car, thereby setting new benchmark in the segment. We already do have that level of disposable income and Ford could've leveraged it perfectly. The new Mustang has a beautiful European elegance and big brawny V8, naturally aspirated, both of which Indians find attractive. I think the 3 Americans are reading the market wrong.(wait for the SRT pricing!) Just because the things are expensive we don't open our wallets. We have to find value in the proposition.

On the other hand I'm happy they have priced it out of the park. A good value (around 50L) used car with endless customisable opportunities 2-3 years down the lane.

Feature to feature I couldn't find the US GT Fastback Premium isn't equal to the one in India.

Anyways it STILL doesn't make any sense to charge USD 25,000 more under all the overheads you have posted.

Like I said before, Ford has all the rights to price the Mustang the way it is. But don't try to convince that they HAD to.

I think you have still not understood CBU Taxes - have a look at posts before. FORD is charging prices from Indian customer less than what they charge for EcoBoost in the US or elsewhere, whatever you see extra is all going to Government. These are not overheads, calculate landing costs of Mustang Eco Boost using USD prices in the USA, when you add up all duties, this cost will be more than what FORD India charges for loaded GT in India. They are invoicing cars to India at internal stock transfer prices based on costs, far less than US prices, just that all duties and taxes are too high.

No one is trying to convince you, just trying to tell you that there are too many taxes when you import CBU in India.

Both are imported as CBUs to India. If you compare the local prices, the S60 T6 is 42 lac ex showroom while the Mustang GT is 65 lac ex showroom. Go figure!
I wish the folks who are talking about 200% duty, government taxes, transport charges etc. read this post. Or may be talk to Volvo and ask them to follow Ford.

GT350R is not yet available as a Right Hand Drive variant.

I don't know what you guys are comparing to?

Have a look at custom data for Volvo vs FORD. Volvo imports S60 at about half price of Mustang , if we use the same factor as FORD is using, VOLVO should have been priced at 32-35 Lac (depending on variant) - so who is charging extra ?

Edit - Comparison with S60 - Diesel - could not find data of Petrol

Fantastic review. Read every word of it.

I wonder how quick will the Mustang be available in dealerships in Bangalore. Will be a pity if there is no such plan.

That is a pity. When I saw the current Mustang for the first time in Los Angeles, its the rear tail light that really got my attention. For me, it was almost a reason to buy the car.

Total paisa-vasool review, unlike the car!!! There are no 2 ways about it that the Mustang is way overpriced, but even then it will initially sell easily.

Noted this discrepancy in the review which mentions there's no Navigation but the pictures clearly show Navigation in Top Right Corner. Are the pictures in question of US Mustang and not the Indian one ? (Hint : Temperature in Fahrenheit, Michigan Avenue & HD-Radio)

My Uncle is a huge car-guy and has bought the 50th anniversary Mustang in the US.

He dropped me this email after I linked him to this review. Some very interesting points, including why he owns a manual but finds the AT superior!

I read the Mustang thread and found it interesting. It does capture the essence of the car. A couple of observations:

Ford Branding
The write-up says Ford does not appear anywhere on the bodywork; that is true, but there is a big Ford logo on the top center of the windshield.

Manual vs Auto
The writer laments the lack of a manual tranny; the auto is actually faster and much better than the manual. I believe the manual is made in China, and is very unrefined, noisy, and has a lot of driveline slack. The shifts are notch, and most people hate it. Even though I ordered a manual, I sometimes rent an auto GT from Hertz, and find it significantly superior.

Cheap Plastics
You can order premium package which has soft touch plastics that feel a little more upscale; the center console is still a cheap, hard shiny plastic.

Ford Racing Touring Exhaust
The car has a tube that connects the inlet manifold to the interior to “enhance” the sound. Most enthusiasts plug this tube, as the sound is more annoying than exhilarating. The car sounds great on the outside, but you can't hear the exhaust in the cabin with the windows up. I installed a Ford Racing Touring exhaust for $1,300. The car now sounds even better on the outside, but you still can't hear the exhaust rasp inside. I should have gone with the Ford Racing Sport exhaust, which is louder. Amazed that the car feels a lot quicker with the new exhaust.

Ford Racing Power Pack II
My mustang has been in the shop almost three weeks while they are trying to fix an A/C leak. They have pulled the entire dash; I'll probably deal with all kinds of squeaks and rattles from now on. Also having them install Ford Racing Power Pack II. The pricier Power Pack III boosts power 60+ HP at the top end, but kills low end torque. I love the flat torque curve of the Coyote, and Power Pack II keeps it, but really wakes up the car.

Just have a look at this Sponsored Ad by SC Ford;

Why are they mentioning V6 & Ecoboost options if it isn't being offered in India ?

Excellent review ! I drive an ecoboost (rental )here and I agree to quite a few feedback mentioned in the review. The Shaker Audio is awful and I find myself rolling down the windows and enjoying the sweet whistle of the boost. And yes, those retro looking stuff inside and outside are awesome. This car feels special !

There has been a lot of talk around Ford doing some party tricks to make the Ecoboost sound beefy when revved. You do get that feeling and I don't mind getting misled ! Additionally, I really like the drive-ability of the ecoboost and the only let down is the automatic gearbox. It does feel confused at times.

Do we know if the Mustang GT comes into India with the performance package ? Since its a CBU, they should really bring the Manual as well as the Shelby GT 350. Hopefully in a year or two.

1964 Mustang vs 2016 Mustang

The 1964 Mustang has a V8 under its hood, a 4.7 ltr engine churning out 213 BHP and 407 NM of torque @ 2800 RPM. Power is transmitted thru' a 3 speed auto box.

Excerpts

The original Mustang was also a car that allowed the customer to choose whatever they wanted on it. Check out the eye-popping list of ‘accessories’. There was a choice of four engines, three clutches, seven transmissions, two drive shafts and four brake systems! Even disc brakes were optional, according to Ford’s official communication of the time, and this car has them.
