On paper atleast, Suzuki Boosterjet 1.0 doesn't seem to be as impressive as Ford EcoBoost 1.0.

Baleno 1.2 K12 Vs Baleno 1.0 Boosterjet

Size: 66.9 KB

Baleno 1.2 K12 Power: 84 BHP
Baleno 1.0 Boosterjet Power: 101 BHP
Power up by 20.2%

Baleno 1.2 K12 Torque: 115 Nm
Baleno 1.0 Boosterjet Torque: 150 Nm
Torque up by 30.43%

Baleno 1.2 K12 Fuel Economy: 21.4 Kmpl
Baleno 1.0 Boosterjet Fuel Economy: 21.1 kmpl
Fuel Economy Up by -1.4%

Baleno 1.2 K12 On Road Price: Rs. 9.01 Lacs
Baleno 1.0 Boosterjet Price: Rs. 10.67 Lacs
Price Up By 18.5%

Ecosport 1.5 Ti VCT Vs Ecosport 1.0 EcoBoost

Maruti Baleno RS : Official Review-1.0ecoboost.jpg

Ecosport 1.5 Ti VCT Power: 112 BHP
Ecosport 1.0 EcoBoost Power: 125 BHP
Power up by 11.6%

Ecosport 1.5 Ti VCT Torque: 140 Nm
Ecosport 1.0 EcoBoost Torque: 170 Nm
Torque up by 21.4%

Ecosport 1.5 Ti VCT Fuel Economy: 15.8 Kmpl
Ecosport 1.0 EcoBoost Fuel Economy: 18.9 kmpl
Fuel Economy Up by 19.62%

Ecosport 1.5 Ti VCT On Road Price: Rs. 10.91 Lacs
Ecosport 1.0 EcoBoost Price: Rs. 12.63 Lacs
Price Up By 15.7%

Of course, another way to interpret this is that K12 engine is still pretty good and Ford 1.5 Ti VCT engine is not that great

Anyway, from the above numbers, direct comparisons between EcoBoost and Boosterjet engines can be made too.

Isn't the Baleno NA output at 83 bhp and 115nm ?
The 96 bhp and 133nm is the power/torque to weight ratio.

Then the RS numbers would be 106 bhp and 158 nm .

Totally off topic, but how will the car in question, Baleno RS, compare against the diesel hot hatches, Figo 1.5 and Polo GT Tdi?

0-100 Timings maybe?

Some of the most important questions revolving around a Maruti is "Kitna Deti Hai". Since it has been made clear that it is not a "hot hatch" the reviewer may kindly indicate the answer to the "million dollar question".

Tatkal edition perhaps best describes the Baleno RS. Being a Maruti, it will no doubt garner some numbers; but the premium pricing, three pot engine, lack of auto transmission and most importantly lack of a distinct external identity will certainly prevent it from becoming a best seller.

As has been pointed out, Polo Tsi and Punto Abarth are not too far off. Had the RS been priced at least 50k lower, it would have been a different game altogether.

My instinct says that we will see a lot of RS clones on the road soon. A blackened alloy and a modified grill will not be too hard to fix to a regular Baleno.

Thanks for the well written and timely review.

A noob question though - why didn't Maruti/Suzuki use the 1.2 K series engine with the turbo? Was cost a major factor there?

As per Autocar India,

Figo 1.5 TDCI : 10.55
Polo GT TDI : 11.52
Baleno 1.2 : 12.6

Maruti says Baleno RS has 14 percent better 0-100 timing than 1.2 NA Baleno.

So that's roughly 10.84 seconds!!

But, 1.0 booster jet Baleno in Europe(more powerful) does 0-100 in 11.4 seconds. Something is missing

Suzuki has not developed 1.2 booster jet engine. They have turbo charged only 1.0 and 1.4 engines. 1.2 booster jet would have been really great.

Could you guys specify or post some pictures related to the spare tyre. I mean on the 1.2L Baleno alpha, it's the lower size non-alloy tire provided as the spare in-line to the Maruti's cost and space cutting techniques.

Is the same repeated in RS edition too?

Also Is there any increase in the insulation material under the hood? Any cost cutting reduced for the 1.5lakh premium add-on?

All same buddy. There is nothing to feel premium by paying more than 1.5 lakhs. Maruti should have localised this engine. Pricing it more than diesel Baleno is ridiculous. Instead, get a diesel Baleno and remap it : it would be more faster and fuel efficient too

Maruti charges 1.5 lakhs premium even for 1.6 S-Cross, but that's totally justified.

Dear Sir

Amazing calculations and analysis sir.

There is a slight correction in the torque gone up in Baleno RS.

It has to be up by 30.43% instead of 12.7%

Regards

Purely in terms of performance comparisons, any power and torque benefit that the EcoBoost has is nullified by the additional 300 kg of weight for the EcoSport over the Baleno RS (1258 kg vs 950 kg)!

Put another way - a Baleno RS with 4 regular-sized adult occupants weighs as much as an empty EcoSport EcoBoost.

Many countries have tax regulations around engines being smaller than/larger than 1 litre. That's the reason Suzuki's BoosterJet and Ford's EcoBoost come in at just under 1000 cc, to avail those tax benefits. They've just provided an international engine here. We're fortunate that VW had a 1.2 TSI engine in their portfolio (which aligns with India's 1.2L tax segment), which we've got here.

Considering that this is the same engine that does duty in Alto minus the turbo, I think we can soon see turboed Alto's What all additional parts would the Alto require to make the upgrade?

Haha not easy!!! Many parts are different. Also its direct injection motor. Injectors, Pistons, timing chain, turbo, intercooler, ECU etc etc needs to be added

Better to go with after market forced induction!!

In this chart the best bet is the Figo DCT, for me, it offers

# ESP, TCS, HLA, Dual Airbags + ABS with EBD
# Option to have side & curtain airbags
# Bigger naturally aspirated engine - lesser stress on the engine
# Dual Clutch 6 speed Automatic

All these at 7.44 lacs Ex Delhi - 1.25 lacs lesser than the Baleno RS and 1.78 lacs lesser than the GT TSI. Of course a little trade off in performance but the Figo ain't that bad either.

2 Points against the Figo

1. Baleno RS is a Maruti
2. GT TSI has a turbo charged engine

Nevertheless, if this move from Maruti can motivate Honda and Hyundai to get their turbo petrol engines, it'll be great.
Of course pricing would be premium considering H's & H's recent pricing strategy.

Fantastic review BTW

The USP of this engine appears to be Efficiency rather than Performance.
This is clear from Maruti's strategy of introducing it in the Baleno rather than the Swift (which was their original Hot hatch and is still marketed that way). The minor drop in fuel economy figures could be a result of increased weight compared to the 1.2L.

I foresee Maruti trying to localize this engine by quoting Baleno volumes to its suppliers, and eventually using this as the primary engine in place of the 1.2K series in its lineup as the newer emission norms come in.

At the end of the day, Maruti is here for the volumes and profits, not to simply please the enthusiasts.

Absolutely ridiculous pricing. I went to check Ignis when it was launched. SA told me around 50-60k difference from regular Baleno. Very stupid indeed of Maruti. VW GT TSi looks a steal now.
