Ceat Safety Drive, 5.90-15. Or MRF Legend, whichever is available. I like the Ceat purely for the more period looking tread. Thin whitewalls are also available in both.

I only saw this car once after it was completed, and as you can see it was in the night so couldnt get a close look, but she was a beaut alright. She even had working semaphores I recall.

A friend had gotten 15inch Kumho (or some other korean brand) radials for his DeSoto, with a thin white strip. They weren't even too expenseive from what I remember.

MRF Twin-Tread 5.90-15 available with white walls and black walls.
MRF Legend 5.90-15 are black walls only.

Those white sidewalled tires look great. We had them in our fiat way back in the '80's.

IMHO, this was the most uncomplicated grille, that the Ambassador ever came with.

Identical to the Mark II, a raised crease moulding defined itself from one rear fender, over the short squared-off short rear wheel arch, defined the a vestigeal running board (rocker panel), over the tall squared-off front wheel arch, around the front under the grille, over the tall front wheel arch on the other side, the rocker panel under the doors, rear wheel arch and flattened itself into the rear fender.

Again, like the Mark II before it, the Mark III's front bumper was mounted below the grille. And it had small chrome ridged overriders.

Mark 4
By contrast, the Mark 4 debuted with a shorter Cadillacesque egg-crate grille made with five horizontal chrome bars and nine vertical chrome bars.

As the grille was shorter, there was a raised moulding below the grille on which the bumper was mounted.

This made room for a rounded valance panel below the bumper, which had louvres stamped into it. The earlier Mark 1, 2 and 3 did not have this valance panel.

Also early Mark 4s had white square parking lights and curved amber trafficators mounted on the ends of the valance panel.

Also debuted with this model, the moulded textured black rubber overriders.
Between these rubber overriders, the front bumper comprised two horizontal bars that revealed the slotted valance moulding behind it.

The Mark 4 was the first Ambassador to omit the signature hole in the bumper for a starting hand-crank.

Later Mark 4s had a grille with eight horizontal chrome bars and exactly five vertical bars behind them.

Then the parking light returned to the Mark III's round flat type. See the stamped ventilation holes in the bumper holder moulding on the valance panel in this overworked, Uttaranchal government servant.

At one time, the horizontal bars started to be painted matt black.

the amby was once launched by the AVIGO varient but that didn,t too well.it had all leather upholstry & MINI lookalike dash.

the newest of the lot, the AMBY GRAND 1.5 DIESEL

though the GRAND has been there since 2003, but this year saw some changes like a new plastic door panel relacing the older panels. smoother engine etc. but the biggest changes are the return of MARK 1 taillamps & the addition of the moonroof.
(I KNOW THE TAXI OWNER SO I DID NOT BLUR THE NOS.)

@ Anjan & Ram: Didn't the early mark IVs come with a split front bumper, ie there was nothing in the center portion ? I clearly remember seeing some of these in my childhood days. This was soon replaced by the single piece continuous bumper.

Yes SuperSelect indeed -the Mark 4 was introduced in February 1979 and for nearly two years the front bumpers were two peice ones at either sides with the centre remaining blank, exposing the paintwork. Sometime in 1981 this central portion was added, completing the looks. Some of the 1979-81 Mark 4 owners later got this central portion fitted as an accesssory. I'll post a picture of an original Mark 4, without a central portion bumper from 1979.

Thanks guys ! The mark 4 has pleasant memories.. my father got his first Amby - a used 79 model sometime in 81. MTY 2205 was in a lovely terracotta brown colour, and had a clarion music system with 4 speakers - quite a novelty then !! Graduating from the 1959 fiat select we then had, the Amby seemed like the epitome of comfort and spaciousness, though mom found her a bit cumbersome to handle, and decided to keep the fiat for herself
The second Mk 4, MMG 4189 came along in 1982. She was black, and had air conditioning ! Wow, were we thrilled , for in those days only "imported" cars had an aircon ! She was sold the day we got our first Maruti. Wish I had pictures.
