Did you paint the top already?

Nilesh, we are actually finishing the White and the Black here, we will give it Another Final coat in the booth. Doing that because, it becomes too difficult and time consuming spraying all 3 colors on the same day, we may run short of time.

Some more pics for you.

I am not clear why this is called a Kombi, it should be a van or a bus. As far as I know, a Kombi is a station wagon in German language, the other and older word used was "Lieferwagen". Today the Germans generally say Kombi when they mean a stationwagon, like the Skoda Octavia Kombi

These Vans are generally known as Bulli's, not the agressive kind.
BTW, did the split screen Bulli also come with the rear curved glasses?
Just some thoughts going through my mind.

Cheers harit

Harit,

This bus came from Brazil and there they are sold as VW Kombi

This is why Pavan titled this thread as Kombi.

Pavan,

Any other reason?

Cheers,
Nilesh

I'd agree that a Type 2 is more of a bus than a station wagon. However, VW would disagree. The Splittie was aggressively marketed as a Station Wagon, and even pitched against other wagons of the era in their ads.

VW did however accept that the Splittie was inspired by a Bus D'uh!

Yes, with and without the rear curved windows, the side cargo windows & the skylights.

This is what i had read initially before naming this thread

Kombi, from German: Kombinationskraftwagen (combination motor vehicle), with side windows and removable rear seats, both a passenger and a cargo vehicle combined.

And this very bus comes with the seats fixed with a Brass Wing-Nut, which makes it a breeze to remove the seats when not needed, unlike the contemproray Nuts and Bolts like in my Bus and few other Bus's i have seen.

Hi Harit,My splitscreen bus is a german made 1959 Delux microbus as on my Mplate, also known as a 15 window bus.It has the curved corner windows.
but not the sky light windows. the only other german delux microbus which also has the curved corner window is the 23 window model with the sky lights also fitted.

Sometimes a sprint race starts looking like a Marathon, couple of weeks ago, this Bus seems to be approaching its finishing stage, but its still far from being there.

One great achievement this week, We completed the Final Paint on the Kombi.

The Kombi is looking brilliant already! Can't wait to see the finished one after all the accessories, upholstery et al are finally joined to the body. I must say, the color combo is absolutely stunning. The beauty of these cars was quite hidden in their intelligent use of colors and chrome detailing. Great job in progress, Pavan.

Awaiting new clutch components and few more mechanical upgrades, though there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Kombi in terms of running.

The upholstery guys are off to Chennai to get the materials chosen by Nilesh during his last visit from the UK, hopefully the next weekend the work might just get started.

Hey Pavan Sir,

3 Months and no update...What's the status of the restoration and when do we see the final unveiling?

It's not nice to keep motorheads hanging...especially on such an interesting project

Hi Roshan,

The restoration is on course and at a SLOW pace ( the need for this project )

The Delivery is scheduled for December 2013, and i intend to get the car 100% complete by end of August or Mid September 2013.

1) Seats are sent over to the upholsterer, should come over in the next 10 - 15 days time. ( doing it Slowly ) LOL

2) Engine has to be downed as we need to replace the clutch components, but not done as Nilesh yet has to decide on the engine trims ( Chrome / Stock )

3) Electrical wiring is 90% complete, rest 10% once the engine is downed.

Presently the bumpers that are badly rusted is now ready and we should paint it before weekend ( I forgot what color .....!!! )

Pavan Sir, couple of updated Pics ....

Restoration threads are the only solace for me out here in Dubai.
I'm a guy preferring a MM550/MM540/Ambassador.but this thread has also got me hooked.

I guess with the amount of VW vehicles (especially bettles) you have worked on, you could be an Ambassador for VW restoration.

An apt nickname(with all due honours, sir) for you would be

'The BettleMan'

Default Request regarding information on VW Kombi

This is a request from Roberto SCHMIDT,Chief Photographer - South Asia, AFP, France. Shall be thankful if he is provided with the information about VW Kombi and their owners.

"QUOTE"

I am writing to you today because we, Agence France-Presse (AFP), are doing a story on owners of the much used VW Combi. We are doing a compilation of images of owners of some of these vehicles that are still in circulation.

I have not seen many in India during my stay in India but was wondering if you had a better idea of where I should be looking.

I would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

I thank you in advance for your help in this matter,

Sincerely,

Roberto
