2nd - 16th February 2016

Work proceeds on the interiors parallely. Luckily we had one portion of the original interiors still in place, so we got the right reference. The fabric chosen I am not so sure about, but options are limited. Lets see.

More horrors as we go along. New portions being fabricated for almost every panel. All precautions have been taken for corrosion, this will be the true test a couple of years down the line!

Bootlid is mostly compeleted. Luckily I managed to get a Vanguard script badge which fits at an angle to the right of the number plate, which was missing earlier. Locally cast, but better than nothing.

15th July 2016

Things had slowed down a but since the rear glass unfortunately broke while in storage. I knew that finding a glass locally would be near impossible. While finding one abroad would be much more likely, bringing it to India (without damage) would probably cost what I paid for the car. The third option was to fabricate it locally, it has been done before and Shrivardhan assures me of a good result. However there is nothing like having the original item, and I later remembered that I had bought a brand new front and rear glass from the erstwhile Standard Motors dealer in Pune many years ago, and had broken one of the two. Luckily enough after checking, it was the front glass that had broken, and the brand new rear glass was the right size. We made a crate to enure it is safe, and luckily reached Calcutta with no problems.

Finding windscreen and door rubbers also proved to be a challenge. A vendor was located in Australia but he didn't have stock. The rubbers have been made locally itself, and very importantly also has the groove to take the steel trim.

Superb to see this old girl being saved.

I'm in the UK and a fan of old cars - if you ever need a "UK depot" to order parts to I would be happy to receive and ship onwards.

Thanks for the offer Rob - what I really need though are reliable vendors or even scrappers

List up what you need and I'll see what I can do?

I am fairly well connected on the scrap/dismantling side.

Thanks, that's very kind of you. Presently looking for a good set of meters, door and winder handles, all the dash switches and the left ash tray. Was missing 3 hubcaps earlier but got a couple of nice ones on eBay.

Some updates

21st July 2016

The two original master cylinder units for clutch and brake were replaced with local alternatives - I think Ambassador and Tata Sumo not sure. I really didn't want to try and prolong using the original by fitting new kits, machining etc. it'll be a perennial problem.Let's see how this works out.

Meanwhile tinwork continues.Shortly after this a test drive was conducted successfully.

12th August 2016

After running the car for a couple of days, the car was further stripped for final bodywork, including removing the engine.

A quick coat of black is applied to see the final line level and any defects or flaws in the surface. I had almostfinalised on painting the car black, but once we confirmed the original colour we stuck to it.

Karl, are those 5.90 x 15 tyres?

Also, how was the black stripped after your checks? I have a car that needs paint to be stripped and I am not in favor of using caustic soda.

I don't know what commercially available paint removers are based on - is there ones that are not based on caustic soda?

If we do use that, is there any way in which we can ensure that we dont get paint bubbles later?

Nice updates, from rust bucket to a beautiful restored car. This is turning up nicely. I love how well the tinkers are working to make the body correct. A rare thing now a days.
