The rear boot lid is rounded at the lower right and left edges. Though rare, these were a regular feature in factory made later Ambassadors starting from the Mark 4 days till
the early 1990's. One car maybe in a several hundred or maybe one thousand or more, would turn out with such a boot lid. It could be easily mistaken for a aftermarket job, though ! However, Mark I's, II's and 3's were never seen with such a boot lid.

I believe, this is the oldest Ambassador that I have seen with such a freak boot lid. It could be that the boot lid of this old car was changed with one from a later Ambassador with such an OE boot lid..

Anjan Sir, I beg to differ on this. In my time I owned at least four Mark 4 cars starting with one in 1982 & the latest being a 2002 Isuzu 1800. None of them ever came with a rounded boot lid and I was given a categorically negative answer from HM if this is available ex factory - when I was ordering the 2002 one.

May be it was available Ex-factory, in Calcutta and North India - but not in south (we have an example of one in post #1313 below, which I believe is fairly unmolested car from mid-late 1990s).

In south it was common to have the lid rounded as it was a easy mod and in coastal towns in Kerala it was done with the first patch work job - which came usually with in first 2-4 years of the car.

My reason for having it done was simple - the sharp corner of the boot lid when open was in line with my forehead hair line and I have banged my head on the sharp corner (the straight edge you usually got away with a sharp bump) and had minor injuries. This had become an "essential mod" rather than a cosmetic mod.

In south you will still get to see many taxis in smaller towns with this mod on Mark 3 s. For taxis it had become an essential mod rather than a cosmetic one as users not familiar with the car got injured more often.

Agree. But likely its a modification job as I am sure you will agree that the boot lid was one part of Amby which corroded last and hence very rarely replaced

Best Regards & Drive Safe

Another old car with a similar freak boot cover. But can you ascertain as to whether the bodyshell is the original one from 1960 or is it changed over in the late 1970's or 80's ?

Because such a freak boot cover as I said were in quite a few cars in this era.

Not necessarily Anjan. I've seen umpteen numbers of Ambys with rounded corner boot lid in Bangalore only.
And there was/is a reason behind it. That heavy boot lid is basically resting on a rubber strip (all around the shut line) and has a tendency to sag down and hit the corners.
As a result both the bottom edge corners are first to get sharp hit from the lid resulting paint chipping out.

Sir, this car was done up in Coimbatore. Its most likely an aftermarket job. I also notice some Amby with curved boot cover with smaller radius.

In the good old days most Ambys undergoing major overhaul/engine change etc, ended getting their boot lid corners rounded, as sharp corners were a big safety hazard too.The sharp corners injuring the head or foreheads while handling the boot was always a worry. Use to wonder why Hindustan Motors did not incorporate this improvement. Hmmm sellers market??

The cost of changing dies used for stamping the sheet metal might have been prohibitive. Plus no one knew the word "sue" in India

I finally met up with BHPian SCHAKRAVARTHY today - extremely nice of him to have driven down all the way from Mysore to ensure I get the parts I need for my car under restoration - Salut bro!

Our Amby also has a square edged boot lid.

He he he.. That's the beauty of the car. It retains most of the visual cosmetic 'Originality' bits, and combines the essentials an old person/car need to keep up with the times - a reliable faster engine, power steering, power windows, central locking etc.
