Default 1950 Standard Vanguard Estate Phase I

This is a 1950, Phase I, Standard Vanguard Estate. I believe this is a very rare car. It was an one owner car. Originally owned by Mr. Tate in Yercaud. The car was registered on 22-5-1950. It was a direct import. It has the original RC. The car was taken from Yercaud & brought to Chennai.

This person who brought her to Chennai tried some restoration, but he did not transfer the RC to his name. Thus it continued to be an one owner car. While being restored in Chennai by this gentleman, the front Grill & both bumpers were stolen.

I bought the car in October 2007. The body work had to be redone. The brakes & clutch were jammed; new plates & cylinders fitted. Radiator, starter, dynamo, distributor were overhauled. Decarbonozing was done. The head developed a minor crack that was welded. Fortunately the car came with a workshop & owners manuals. Bumpers and some parts were imported from Australia. It sounds funny, but I managed to locate the grill in Chennai, which I am sure was the one stolen from this very car.

The upholstery & paintwork are new. Actually, the shade is a bluish grey but in the photo, it appears to be only blue. Tyres are new, MRF, 600x16. She runs well.cheers:

Thanx Karl. The blue in the photo is not the period shade. In person, it is a bluish grey which was taken from the net & that is the right period shade.

Great work Ananth. Bravo. You have given a lease of life to what might be considered as not such a collective automobile by some.
I had a very original 49 Phase-I Vanguard sedan but it got vandalised during restoration. The car was eventually junked. I think I have original door handles (with a new Key for the driver's side handle) somewhere for the car. If I can find them Ill be glad to send them to you if you would need them.
Great work, keep it up.

Woooooooww, Mr. Ananth!!

This is simbLy awesome!!

Incidentally this is the first time I'm taking fancy to a Vanugard estate!

'glad you managed to find the missing parts and put her together! I presume you got the bumpers from the Standard Vanguard enthusaists' guild, Australia?

Have you ever interacted with Phil Homer, webmaster of the Standard Motor club website?
This car deserves an article in it!

Yes, pics. of before and during restoration also would be welcome.

One thing though- the car has a Salem regn. (I can say as my 1960 Lambretta also has a MDS regn. and is originally from Shevvapet, Salem)
So was it in Salem in between before you brought it to chennai?

If I'm not wrong, Yercaud is in Kerala?

Gogi, sad to hear about your vanguard!

Hi,

If I'm not wrong, Yercaud is in Kerala?

Yercaud is 22kms from Salem. Should explain the Salem registration.

C.S. Ananth great car and great pictures. Saw a really excellent example after a long time. I guess you were talking about the import of bumpers for this very car. The greatest picture is of its dashboard-awesome! Hope you will post its engine bay pictures and more of it.Estates of such cars are very rare and I guess, in its home country too there may be very less surviving examples. You could have got fitted MRF white wall tyres (LEGEND) for your car and as you are in Chennai it would have been easier to procure these.
Even the Morris Oxford Series II (Landmaster) estates are rare and cost a fortune in the UK as fellow club members tell.
