To think ! When my old Wagon R completed 1.1 lakh kms, I thought it was an achievement. And my dad's 1959 Fiat had crossed - wait for this - TWO LAKH MILES - approximately 3.2 lakh Km !! God, those cars were made of something else.

WOW ! Nice one, and quite rare today ! No, PAL never made these, they were always made by aftermarket coachbuilders. One of the most popular one was "starline motors". In fact they even had one with an extended wheelbase, aircon, and some real pampering comforts thrown in !

Got these aluminium beadings from a Delight just before it was broken down. The beading was only on one side of the car. Paid 130rs. Guess its a good deal.

Dear Arun1100 - the car in the photograph is the "Premier Safari". As per the factory BOM, (Bill of Material), the model code was "PDA" (Premier Drive Away) chassis. It had doors but no dicky. It had a half roof, reinforced at the back by two pipes. As delivered from Kurla plant, the body was primed but not painted. The body was built by Starline Motors in Bhandup in suburban Mumbai. The Safari started in 1973 and the first car had an absolutely vertical tailgate and looked very ugly. This car was ceremoniously handed over the actor Shatrughan Sinha from the showroom of Starline Motors in Tardeo Mumbai in 1973. I was standing next to my friend Deepak Chopra who owned starline Motors. I am attaching one picture of a Premier Safari which I took in 2007 in Ahmednagar.

Incidentally, Deepak used to rally alongwith his friend Shyam Punjabi. Their rally team was known as "Team Fox Jackal". He had reduced the wheelbase of his rally prepared car and was it converted to a 2 door model. Its registration number was MMH2060.

My uncle had a dark blue Premier Safari MMD1045 which he gave to my brother-in-law who sold it in Aurangabad.

There used to be one more PAL dealer in Mumbai ny the name Maha Auto in Kalina near Kurla. Maha Auto had extended the wheelbase of one Premier Padmini car. Its registration number was MAP1600. It had the front seats which could be rotated by 90 degress for getting in and getting out. I tested it so I know. The handling was atrocious.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Behram Dhabhar Sir, Thanks for sharing the information on Premier Safari. I am sure many did not not know that there was a model from Premier called Safari.

Nice find Arun ! I remember my uncle having one, jet black, way back in 1974, as kids, we all got the 'privilege' of sitting in the rear, brings back a lot of good memories !

This must be the extended wheelbase car. But looking at the overall shape and the rear glass, does it look like the standard safari? Or is it that the extended wheelbase car was different.

There was a relative of mine who had the safari with 118NE kind of lights and grille. He got it directly from Starline that way. We never used to tell him, but all of us found that car ugly. However this car was totalled in an accident.

This was the luxury model, called SAB-25, made by Starline. I think 25 stood for the 25cm extension of the wheelbase. I remember the Starline showroom at Tardeo, Mumbai where they had these cars on display. In those pre-Maruti days, anything worked, and people actually hankered for these.
