:sigh: I know I know....but things have been really hectic, especially over the last month, with me! Added to which I'm facing a challenge finding some crucial parts like first the engine and gearbox foundations/mounts (ironically I had a pair of both of these but cannot seem to find them now! 'cant recall where I put them ) and now the clutch & pressure plate.

My mech. called me today to say that he finally got a new pressure plate. 'need a clutch plate now. Then the engine + gearbox can be mounted back and then the body back onto the chassis.

Sir, I would like to congratulate you for your efforts on this Herald and on CAN
Are there any updates? (I know you don't like being bugged for updates )
Your resto has motivated me to restore my Mark 3 Herald, but that is for a different thread altogether

What a thorough and methodical restoration you've chosen to do here Stanher - it's a great credit to you. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the finished article

Thank you guys for your kind words! Yes, stay tuned, I should have some updates shortly.

@ruthvik- got your pm reg. your mk3.

Any pics. you have to share?

@Ed: Thank you again, although if you're familiar with Triumph clubs in the UK, my work is still far behind what is done on Heralds there! Still, considering what we have available here, we have to make the best out of it!

Hi Stanher

I grew up in the 70's seeing Triumph Heralds everywhere and still see many at classic car shows here in the UK. They are part of the landscape of my past. I was amazed and delighted when I learnt of their production in India!

You do indeed make the best of what you have available and you are a more genuine, determined and creative restorer for it To be frank, any one with money and access to the sort of services we have in the UK can create a gleaming beauty of a restoration and they don't even have to get their hands dirty in the process!

Keep up the good work my friend

Regards

Finally, after a seemingly eternal silence, an update!

'couldn't get new brake pipes, so got the old ones chemically cleaned and made fully functional again. All refitted now.

'got new engine and gearbox mounts too.

Next came the long-standing issue with the cluch plate- I managed to get a new pressure plate, but still on the lookout for the clutch plate.
A local parts dealer I know of said he'd ordered one but would take some time until it arrived.

My mech. had a suggestion, and even jai (the owner) seemed ok with it as long as it could get the car even temporarily running- get the old clutch plate reconditioned to some extent with new springs fitted and get the rims 'faced' so it'll serve the purpose until a new one could be sourced.

So got it out the other day.

As part of the new plan- when the tinkering/bodywork is done, the car will be trucked off to Madras where the remaining of the restoration work will be carried out.

So a reconditioned clutch plate might work out just fine in the meantime.

So, is the Herald standing on its own wheels then?
And You are able to source new clutch plates?
And no post in this thread is complete without the magic words -
Any updates?

Not yet, will be once the engine/gearbox is ready to go on.

Unfortunately on- as I mentioned here, that's what is bringing further work to a standstill now!

Incidentally, jai did tell me he has a spare clutch plate bought for Standard 10 (which is the same as this) and is willing to let it go on this.

But for now, this clutch plate has already been reconditioned and will do temporarily, as it'll take even longer having to wait for and collect the new clutch plate when it is sent from madras.

Sorry, the update turned up longer than I expected!

Anyways, finally the clutch plate problem is solved, clutch plate (recon) and pressure plate (new) both in now.

The gearbox bell housing was cleaned from inside and washed.

Now re-united with the engine, which got the new mounts...ready to fit onto chassis.

Unfortunately, I didnt get to take pics. of the new plates before the gearbox/engine was re-united.

But nevertheless glad this long-pending job is finally done!

Now the only thing is the chassis, which had turned quite mucky and shabby during the few months it sat idle, now needs a fresh coat of paint, the same matt-finish type that was applied to it earlier.

The garage guys now say their painter is not free- assured me they'd do it tomorrow!

And I dont want to fit these on before the paint is done.

Default Update at last!!!

I'm glad I have an emoticon ready for apologies-

Anyways, I've fairly much progress to speak about as of now, since I'm relatively free at present.

The chassis finally got the re-coat of black as I'd instructed, only this time it wasnt the same matt finish but the glossy (and less attractive IMHO) enamel!

I wasnt around unfortunately, when it was done. But decided to proceed anyway.

One major 'achievement' as of today was the engine/gearbox was finally refitted onto the chassis!!

Also got the tyres refitted onto 2 of the wheel rims, which are now fitted at the front.
Two more to go and the chassis will be on 4 wheels so atleast it can be moved around to avoid inconvenience standing at the same spot all these months!

However, some of the brake piping etc. still has to be sorted out from underneath, hence it has not been lifted off the stands as yet.

Part of the rear suspension also was completed today.

Now for another challenge- the steering box/rack couldnt be made to fit properly as one of the aluminium clamps to secure it is now missing and the rubber U-shape bushes I got for either clamp dont fit at all (too big!)

So now the rack has been removed again and a new U-clamp (as in pics.) to be hunted so it can be remounted.

Further from Monday onwards...
