Sirish,

Could not find a good kit, am looking for a good one. Have asked my friends in Faridabad to look for, if a new one is available.

for your information, I found some sets of new Original Escorts Std Bore and Piston for Rs.2000 and the Ignition set for Rs.230.
I picked up one set of each.
Let me know if you would be interested.

Ajay

WOW! :-O
So beautiful! It's really rare one sees something like this... It looks like it was in a time capsule straight from 1965! Kudos to your friend!
Absolutely brilliant stuff, powertwin!
Wow, alloy chain guard, original footrests, levers, grips, ignition cap, headlight, tank, kneepads, shocks, carb, engine casings, tail light, seat beadings, silencer, forkscrew... Incredible!!!
The only thing that I have a doubt about is the switch on the left side... I have never seen that kind of a switch on the handlebar. The usual one is pictured on page 1 of this thread.
I hope one day I can make my bike look something like this! :-)

Btw, I have heard this model being referred to as "Gandhi" Rajdoot. Probably because of the round glass ;-)

Ask him if he needs the kneepads for the tank, I have an extra set, NOS, I can spare.

@Powertwin,

It is a wonderful find , and many thanks for posting the pics here.
This Bike is certainly a reference Bike for all restorers.

The Carb does n't seem to be a Micarb. It has a tickler instead of a Choke. Can you please post some pics of the Carb and also the name of the carb.

The bakelite Knob , is it white or black in the original bike? as it is white in one side and Black on the other.

The original Tail Lamp and the tank pads are a delight to see.
Is this bike from Tirunelvel dist. ?? which year model?

Can anyone tell me how the steering Damper works? It is not there in my Bike.

Ajay

@ Powertwin, I think the bike is running on Bottle coil system, rather than the single coil inside the magneto. My dad's 1983 Rajdoot also runs on the same system, because the old type coils are becoming kaput frequently.

@ Ajay2233 the carburetor is the original old Amal carburetor, which used to be the OE at that time. To my knowledge, the steering damper is a device designed to control the undesirable and uncontrolled movement of the steering mechanism / handle.

With thanks and regards

@Glomus123
Mine is also a 1983 model, good to find a same year model here.
It has a square headlight unlike yours. Was an Amal Carb. the standard fitting for the 83 model too? because I have a Micarb in it. I think the Bottle coil was an OE in my bike, correct me if I am wrong.

Ajay

Dear Ajay,
Our bike went to through some modification. It has a later model chasis, with telescopic shock absorber in the front. As I know, our 1978 Rajdoot had Original Mikuni (Japan) carburetor. Later versions came with Micarb, which is made under license from Mikuni, which is an exact replica of same Mikuni. So the 83 will of course have a Micarb only, that is the original for it. Old bikes came with Amal carburetors. Amal is a very good old famous carburetor, came with a lot of automobiles

With thanks and regards

Ajay,
As 'am busy with some other assignment ( family) with lack of concentration ( temporary ) ,unable to explain the details you asked for...
* sure will post pics....including the "Exploded view of the carb"
** yes, right side is original knob of this particular bike & LH is of some later RD 175
*** Think 1963 or '64
**** Sure will explain with more pics & sketches if necessary
( Do you know 4 of my bikes have steering dampers, namely James ML 125, BSA BB31, Yezdi 350 ( this has a inverted steering damper)
Aerial 650 RH .
ps: Our RD175 steering damper is a straight fit to BSA BB31

Yes,
This bike is fitted with a "Power Coil" & a starting coil (inside the flywheel),since the Flywheel Magneto Ignition Coil of this Rajdoot produces weak sparks , but now I sourced him a new " Flywheel magneto coil" ,yet to be fitted though.

I would love to see photos and a write up of your Ariel. Perhaps when you find the time in a new thread. Is the Rajdoot damper knob available in shops still? I'm in need of a couple for my old bikes.
regards

Yezdi 350?
Thats a wonderful bike which I have seen and rode on! A friend of mine has touched 140 kmph on the East Coast Road connecting Chennai and Pondicherry.

Certainly the James, BSA BB31 and Ariel 650 are great bikes, but have not got a chance to ride them! Have seen them only in exhibitions!

Please do write up on these bikes when you find time, Guess there would certainly be more people interested to know and understand these bikes.

Regards,
Ajay

Dear Glomus,
I was always of an opinion that the Mikuni and Micarb were totally different Carburetors. Thanks for the Information.I recently found that new Micarbs are still made and sold for Rajdoots.

Actually seeing your avatar, I was wondering which model your Bike would be. I was confused seeing the telescopic arm and the year you had mentioned. How does the telescopic arm performs? is it better than the old fork and shocks set up?

Regards,
Ajay

Dear Ajay,
My dad had the 1983 Rajdoot with the old type shocks. As you know the joint of the shocks has a plastic bush in it, inside with a metal bush. This setup usual worns out frequently in our poor roads, and dad felt it very difficult to ride the bike. Later he did change the fork setup of this bike with a 1988 model setup, he procured from the service station. That model had round headlight and separate Speedometer, and a real Ignition Key, rather than the old Nail-type key and long telescopic shocks which I think are similar to the RD350 shocks, not sure though. This setup works excellently and since he is older now, its more convinient for him.

Lastly when I visited India, the bike was in little bad shape, since dad is not using it. He just pay the taxes and keep at home. But for my surprise, not moving the bike for about 20 days, the rajdoot started with a single kick (of course with choke). I rode it about 5 KMs, but feel the engine lacks power. I had to use clutch and revv high to move it in second / third gear. It has clocked over 1 lakh KMs, in between we did a engine overhaul, changing piston and rings. Now I think it has to be redone. You can see the picture here:
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/motorb...ml#post1615790 (End of an Era ?)

Are original spares still available in Chennai? Can I get a engine head/piston also? If so I would like to procure next time.

With thanks and regards

Dear Glomus,

Your Bike looks really sexy in that Cherry Red Colour.
your dad has preserved it quite well.

YES, I bought a new Escorts Engine Bore and Piston kit for Rs.2000
though the outer box says 1750, I had to pay 2000 for it, the shop has a few more sets.
The set had a bore, standard Mahle piston, piston rings, the pin and the pin locks.
Original Clutch pads are also available. and the package date says Jan 2008. Thanks to Yamaha Motor corp.

regards,
Ajay
