Default Land Rover Dormobile In India

As a kid I always read about expeditions in Magazines and I learned to admire Land Rovers as it was the vehicle of choice for expeditions & safaris.

During my early schooling there was only one Landy visible in my home town Belgaum. It had typical Green/white colour combination and belonged to the Mission Hospital. A lady (foreigner) frequently used to drive it from Sankeshwar to Belgaum a distance of about 50Kms.

Then it was sold a machineshop owner in the eighties and could be spotted regularly. In early nineties it was painted in metallic golden colour and it looked horrible. We approached the owner for the Land rover and were always told that it was not on sale. Few years after repaint the Landy was not visible on the road and was locked in some garage. That Landy was a Dormobile and we didnt know it to be so rare as the Internet age had not started.

In 2007 back we heard from our mechanic that the Landy was on sale and we rushed to the owner, to our disappointment the Dormobile was sold few days before for 90,000 Rupees to a Sardarji who trucked it to Kodaikanal the same day.

It took us weeks to come out of the Depression.

Then in 2008 I bought our first Land Rover (Series I) from Sir Alecís friend on my Honeymoon trip to Darjeeling.

I was trying to find the whereabouts of the Dormobile from last few years and now it is in Amritsar and on sale for 15Lakhs rupees. Here is the link

If any of you get any info about Dormobiles in India keep us informed.

I have also seen this Dormobile in Cant area, if i am not mistaken. It is truely a treat for your eyes. I am from Raichur, used to visit Belgaum frequently.

Btw: Please post few pics more pictures of your LR including the interiors. I am also desperately in lookout for a LR. How is the condition of the engine, as lots of LR's in Darjeeling which are used as taxi's are deiselised.

Hi SILVERWOOD!
Nice to know that you still remember that Landy. I will soon post the images of my Series I Land Rover. Most of the LRs in Darjeeling are very orignal, but they are dissapearing fast. The most common problem with them are the papers, most of them do not have them, even if they have them the taxes are due for decades. Infact the LR which i bought was the only one which i found with uptodate insur
ance. Recently the engines of Swb model are being converted to commander and Lwb model use Eicher engines. But i think you can find orignal engine if you try enough.

Hi silverwood I will definately call you if I can spot a Land Rover.
Also 'invinci', 15 lakh is surely not a price for a S3 Landy (though a Dormobile )
I have started a Thread 'Land Rover support Group' pl. join if you want.

I know most of the owners of these priceless beauties do not care to pay taxes and keep the documents updated.

I am planning to visit GOA with my friends next month, i will certainly drop in to have a look. Please post few pictures of your Landy.

Thanks Sudarshan. I will wait for your PM.
How much does a Landy cost, i know it depends on the condition of the vehicle, i mean to ask you on an average, a ball park figure.

Nowhere else I could find for these pics taken just now in Dubai.

A veritable feast of Land Rovers!
Including a few of the Limited 'Tribute' Edition Defenders - the last ones ever to roll out of the plant - in honour of the First ever Series 1 of 1948.HUE 166. 'Huey'.

Beautiful iconic vehicles. 67 years uninterruptedly at the cutting edge of human endeavour.

Safaris, Overland, Jungles, Deserts, Mountains - Adventure of all kinds and in any form, both in peacetime and in wartime.

Feel very privileged to have seen and photographed these vehicles today!

What an icon the Land Rover is!
