Default High power HUs

http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs...s&displayTab=S

the above link got me thinking. Now those who know me know that this is not something I oft do.

30W rms (ok it is at 1% distortion) is not bad for a HU. Anyone know of a HU that puts out more?

Ah, look at these of the same product
Pre-Amp Outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer) :dual outputs (5V/60 ohms) Subwoofer Output Level/Impedance 5V/60 ohms !

why 60 ohms! And a snr of 100 above is excellent right?

60 ohms is an odd impedance. Usually you'd look at 10-20k ro so as most amps have an input impedance in that range.

So how does that work Navin?

Wouldn't it be getting VERY hot, or is it using a different kind of amplification?

No No Rehaan,

JKD has pointed out the PRE-amplifier output in peak to peak voltage. No pre amp components produces heat (rather needs to)
Don't confuse the Power output (measured in WATTS) with the pre amplifier output (Measured in AC VOLTS peak to peak)

It's odd for a company to state the Pre Amp output @60 ohms.
Generally the input impedance for most amplifiers is about/around 20000 ohms. So for example is you connected two amplifiers on the same set of RCA outs you would effectively have an input impedance of about 10000 ohms.
It would be near impossible to find any electronic device (eq, DSP, amp, processor etc) that had an input impedance of 60 ohms.
That's why Navin found it strange.

Sam, remember I got 10+ years on you and I could assume a lot more chemicals in my system (coming as I did at the fag end of the "Love Generation"). Now imagine my state of mind. No you dont need to imagine - it is evident in the quality of my posts on this forum. Thanks to guys you others can gleam something useful from my rantings.

I dont think the Panny HU is Class D. I too wonder about the heat issue and that is why I have been loathe to recommend such HUs. Still this is a topic that must be investigagted before we discard such products as hocus pocus.

Just revisited the crutchfield link now, it has earned very good feedback over time (4.5 stars out of 5 from 23 people!)

I think you meant "magazines"? that is true, it is hard to believe them due to their vested interests. But the link points to a net shopping site, and I respect user feedbacks, especially if it is a collective opinion from a lot of people over a period of time and unless there is something apparently fishy (one has to filter out overly positive comments out of excitement or sarcastic comments out of frustration)
