Hello,

I am thinking of installing a pair of 6.5 inch coax speakers which have 2 ohm impedances, to go with the Sony GT350S head unit. The Sony specs says its rated 52W x 4 at 4 ohms impedance.
Is there a danger of overheating? Thermal cutoff? Or a blown fuse? I googled a bit and it looks like opinions are divided...
Thanks!

What speaker are you installing? Sounds much like a JBL, lol.

If it is, Yes it'll be OK do not worry.

Hello ram, welcome to our little part of this town. Do not forget to post an intro later.

Yes the 6850 will drive the GTO937 just fine. Matching 4" speakers would be GTO427.

Sam seems that that "2 ohm" rating is scaring some people. Guys dont worry the "2 ohm" rating is nominal. Atleast the 937 measures closer to 3 ohms across much of the freq. range.

this person has tried to explain the relation between speakers and impedance.

navin, last yr when i was going through reviews of alpine HUs and infinty kappa speakers i found many complaining about shutting down of alpine HU and blamed it on HU or speakers.
I also read somewhere that alpine HUs r known to have less powerful int. amplifier than some of other HU like pioneer/kenwood/sony.
Now why manufacturers make speakers with 2ohm rating is to get maximum juice out of amplifier which only ext.amplifier and not int.amplifier can provide.

So based on above if i have to decide about it,i would not use any spk rated at 2ohm without ext.amplifier to be on safer side.
Even if someone uses these spk without ext.amplifier, nothing untoward can happen as u said that sometime spk have higher impedence but what if rating is even lower than said 2ohms for some other manufacturer?

I do not think anyone would make a speaker less than 2 ohms, commercially.

Yes they do/did. Wilson's original WATT had an impedance that dipped to less than 2 ohms (1.5ohms or thereabouts) and posed a pronblem for many an amplifier.

Besides in my mad crazy younger days I DIYed a line soruce of 6 8" woofers (8 ohms each) wired in parallel. I was trying to make a scaled down replica of the some speaker I think it was called Infinity IRS system V.
