| BHPian | Hi guys, I have decided to upgrade my Pioneer 6850 cd, mp3 Head unit so i decided to get the 9887 or the pioneer p880.. since it is currently out of stock here, i thought i have enough time to decide between the pio and alpine. so please help me decide considering my requirements. the HU should have an active xo, time alignment, ipod integration 24 bit dac, it shouldn't be bright at all etc etc. if anyone heard both the HUs, ill really appreciate your opinion. and if anyone can help me get these HU ill be really thankful. cheers clip p.s. - my pio 6850 and a pio 12 disc changer is up fo sale. | Senior - BHPian | I've listened to both these HUs and I will never vouch for a P80. Alpine 9887 is the HU to go for! Make sure you match it up with some good amps and speakers etc. Yes, let me elaborate. If you're going in for a basic set of speakers + amps setup, there's not much of benefit in getting a 9887 into your setup. The Pio one will do good here. But, if you have/plan to get a bit higher speakers + amps, then the 9887 definitely is the HU to buy now. Remembering Clip's setup, I strongly suggest a 9887. He can upgrade his amps when the moolah allows him to do so.

| BHPian | Good players have a lot to do with how they are setup, some of the best players can sound not so great when paired with not so good equipment and installed and tuned improper. I think guys Like Anwar can really get the best out of anything (unless he is in a off mood ), I have been on a joint tune session with him for a P980BT, sounded better than any Pio head selling in India likes of 7950, 6950. Would love to get feedback from him on the Alpine 9887's SQ.@clip: what equipment are you planning to run with this head ? |

| Intresting topic, i am in same dilemma which HU to go for!24 bit burr brown is added advantage but it's at it's best if played cd audio only.Active Xo are always a plus. What good a time alignement does to a normal speakers. as i don't have a high end setp, will one recommend 9887 or 880 if we forget their cost for a momment for a normal set up....

Infractions: 0/1 (5) | IMO --SQwise 9887 anyday. Hands down.and P80 is nowwhere close to being as warm as the 9887.The Alpine warmth cannot be compared to the Pioneer Head Unit.I luckily have heard both in similar set ups. Rest gurus will say.

| @Clip.. I am currently using the 9887 with Alpine X-type components and Audison SRx2 (no sub at present), my description of the sound would be as follows- 1. Very clean, open and detailed 2. Tight midbass 3. Sound is slightly on the lean side especially for vocals & brass instruments e.g. saxophone, not sure if I'd call it warm, but that's (a) purely my personal reaction to the sound, (b)also based on comparison with my home audio system and (c) influenced by my speakers & amp... My description is also based on comparision with my previous HU (Blaupunkt Bahamas) All in all, an HU I am pretty happy with. I'm afraid I havent heard the Pioneer P880, except very briefly, and that too in a setup with very different elements from mine, so I cant really comment on the same... |
