Good catch!! the new series feels a bit cheap though, specially the buttons. tried the 4050 & 5050, but then settled for 7950

Check the 4050 and 5050. I think the only difference between 5050 and 4050 is that cd loading.

@BaCkSeAtDrIVeR

Right said 4050 has option for slot loading and in 5050 we need to remove the face first. But in look wise 4050 is looking better in flesh. And also in grey market price differene is 800-1000.

So better go for 4050 and then invest the saving in speakers or buy the 2gb pen drive

More than 3 peopel told me the same when the 2007 x950 series was launched. That it looks "fake" and is very cheaply built

Well yeah the 5050UB seems to be very slim and it has a joystick like big button like the sony ericsson. I'm scared of breaking it if I pres/turn it hard.

What's worse is that the button is very inaccurate and leads to wrong presses on a number of occasions. Instead of select by pressing the knob many times it goes to left or right.

The pio 5050 indeed is not built as good as the 5950, but it definitely sounds better, and one has to get a hang of how to use it that's it, but it definitely sounds better than last year's model.

I dont know why the "feel", "touch" is mattering so much. You dont have to marry it.

In person, the Pioneers seemed to be exactly as good (or tacky, whichever way you prefer it) as the older ones, and sounded like that too. The menus are different (a bit similar to Blaus that I've detested over the years for this very reason), some buttons are like 'feather touch'. Otherwise they seemed perfectly fine, just like the Pioneers have always been. For the grey price, i wouldn't complain.

Which regular Pioneer head unit of the yesteryears is the benchmark for "impeccable build quality" and "oooh... its so hot to touch, I almost orgasmed"? I want to check it out too.

I am not to familiar with all the HUs etc, but I know that when my friend installed the 5950, I was pretty disappointed that to navigate through your ipod songs, you had to use the up/down/left/right buttons, and not the jog dial as would have made intuitive sense. The result was that it was a futile process to try and navigate through your songs on-the-fly, and you were better off creating playlists. This makes me think that it's better to have a flash drive then rather than an iPod.

Anyway, is this also the case with the newer models, or have they made it better, or have they made it worse?

The cheaper models have buttons but in higher models there is jog dial, Which is I think in the newer series also.
