Question HUs with USB pen drives - Playlists

So the latest decision in ICE stuff on my end is to get a USB model (most probably Kenwood MP4036U) and buy one or two 4GB pen drives, since they have hit the below Rs. 1,000 price range.

Usually, I just do "play all" with shuffle on my mp3 player. I am assuming that this would be possible and not a problem at all.

But other than that I usually have a playlist of songs that are let's say palatable to the average person, that is to say no metal etc. Sometimes I even have an old person friendly playlist of Indian music, fusion etc.

Do USB HUs have playlist functionality with pen drives? If so, would the playlist be in m3u format, or something else? And how does one select it from the HU menu?

Even though the manual says no playlist support, you can do it

1. Use M3U lists
2. While creating, ensure to load tracks from the external drive,
so this wont cause any "drive letter mismatches."
3. Save the files in the same folder as the list or preferably use only the ROOT directory on your pen drive.

In my player(Pioneer DEH 7950UB) its very easy either play in shuffle mode or one by one you you can select track or folder too by using list option.

Thanks Ajaybiz, I thought as much. "Play All Tracks" with "Shuffle" should be pretty much standard. So really now I am wondering about playlists.

@souljah: How do you use the .m3u playlist then? Does it show up when you scroll through the file names? Also then are playlists easy to use? (As in can you change from one playlist to another while driving or would one have to stop?)

Unfortunately I dont own a HU yet. If someone would be kind enough to donate / lend me a pioneer USB HU for a few weeks I will report back

Vebmetal when you plug in the HU should pick up the playlist, try it and report back.

So will this work on the Pioneer 7950UB? :

I keep all my mp3s on the flash drive in a Folder called "Music"

In the root directory I create two .m3u playlists - allsongs.m3u and easylistening.m3u. The first playlist would have a link to all songs in "Music" e.g \Music\Metallica - One.mp3. The second playlist would only link to a few songs.

So then when I press "List" on the HU, am I guessing correct that three things will appear like this? :
Quote:
allsongs.m3u
easylistening.m3u
Music
Could someone with this HU please experiment and report back? pretty please, pretty please.

anywya, in the pdf manual for the DEH-P7900UB I found that under "Additional Information" related to USB memory, it says that it supports .m3u playlists! yippee! So how does it work? And can I do what I want to do above ^ ?

Read my earlier post.

Playlist and files in the same directory would be your best bet. Everything in the root folder will make it easier.

What I do when I want files to show up at the top of the list is to mark them 00_filename 01_filename 02_filename etc

Baaki some 7950 owner must report back, but im pretty confidant about this should is the way it works.
