Sorry if this has been asked before, but I get no categorical opinion.

In my Baleno, I have JBL GTO 637 6-inch coaxial in the rear, and the stock speakers in front driven by a Pioneer 4750 HU. I wanted to have JBL components in front, but the dealer tells me I will then need an amplifier to drive them. I am not inclined for the extra expense.
He suggests I move the 637 to the front and put GTO 937 ovals in the rear. Gurus, need some light on this please.

@filcord, an amp is not exactly a necessity for components (for eg. the GTO507s or 607s or the CS2165c). The HU will drive them reasonably well, if you do not listen to them at high volumes. But they will sound a lot better (at low & high volumes) when you amp them.

If you don't plan to get an amp at all, get the JBL CS2165c (6.5" 2-way comps). I think they will take the lower power of the HU better than the GTOs. The GTOs will sound better if you plan to amp the comps later.

1. components do not make an amp mandatory.
2. using 937 (on a MDF tray) give you more bass. components in the front will improve the front soundstage. pick your poison (or if you are willing to bite the bullet and trade in the 637s get the 607 in the front and 937 n a MDF tray in teh rear).

Thanks guys, finally I put the GTO 637 in front, GTO 937 in the rear shelf (had to cut the metal shelf, but they did a neat job). I have amped them with a JBL CS60.4. The sound is so much sweeter, fuller and clearer than before, I use every excuse to drive just so I can listen.

GTO is better as far as music quality is concerned but it's a bit costly when compared to CS !

In case of component speakers, how is the SQ affected by an increase in size ? The concerned speakers are GTO507 and 607s. They'll be driven off the HU, thought i might add an amp later on...

I guess, the greater the diameter of the driver's cone, the more air it can move. The 607 should theoretically produce more bass than the 507.

good generalization only that some small woofers (10-12") can move more air than larger woofers (15-18"). also please remeber in music movement of air is only one factor to consider.
