Default Volkswagen opens safety 'centre of competence'

With its new safety centre, Volkswagen has brought together its vehicle safety expertise at a single location.

-New structure of 8,000 square metres on three floors.

-All safety activities now under single roof

-New crash sled technology claimed to set new standards in accident research

-Realistic 'prebraking' accident scenarios

At the new sled facility, vehicle tests at speeds of up to 100 km/h with total weights of up to three tons are possible.

This state-of-the-art sled system allows us to reproduce the dynamic movements of a crash as well as simulate so-called ‘prebraking’ scenarios

The cars will be accelerated on a 140 meters (460 feet) long underfloor cable-rail system and slammed into obstacles. As one test is ongoing, another can be prepared so that the target of 800 sled tests per year is maintained (that’s roughly a little over two crash tests per day

In addition to the new sled system, there are also multiple test benches located on the ground floor of the hall. On the first floor, the crash test vehicles are first prepared for and later thoroughly analysed after the test.

Sled testing, as the procedure Is called, is a cost-effective way of seeing how cars and parts would survive an impact. Additional systems, like airbag deployment, can also be studied. There are currently two types of sleds for this operation: one that accelerates the car from a standstill and slams it into an obstacle, and another that makes use of a hydraulic ram to simulate impact

VW's view:

In this way, Volkswagen is setting new standards in accident research. In the new safety centre, we are bringing together all of our safety-related activities under a single roof. That not only allows us to make use of new testing technologies, but also it affords us shorter distances and additional synergy effects
