Default Re: Chennai to Kanyakumari Tour

Let me attempt to give you a plan to cover Pondicherry, Rameswaram & Kanyakumari in that order. I am not sure how many days your parents intend to spend in each of these places hence you will have to tweak the plan accordingly.

Start from Baroda by taking the Navjeevan Express/12655 SuperFast Vadodara/BRC to Chennai/MAS - India Rail Info - A Busy Junction for Travellers & Rail Enthusiasts to Chennai, stay overnight at Chennai, if need be they can spend a day in Chennai to do some sightseeing locally.

Take a cab early next morning or the day after depending on Chennai sight seeing plans to Pondicherry, retain the cab for a day if need be so that Pondicherry can be seen around leisurely over two days, ask the cab driver to drop your parents at Villupuram Jn. which is an hour's drive from Pondicherry. Take the overnight Chennai-Rameswaram Sethu Express/16713 Express Villupuram/VM to Rameswaram/RMM - India Rail Info - A Busy Junction for Travellers & Rail Enthusiasts train to Rameswaram. Spend a day or two out there depending on their interests in terms of visiting Dhanushkodi etc.

From Rameswaram take Rameswaram Kanyakumari SF Express/12789 SuperFast Rameswaram/RMM to Kanniyakumari/CAPE - India Rail Info - A Busy Junction for Travellers & Rail Enthusiasts an overnight train to Kanyakumari. Again spend one or two days in Kanyakumari.

For the return you could take the Gandhidham Express/16336 Express Nagercoil/NCJ to Vadodara/BRC - India Rail Info - A Busy Junction for Travellers & Rail Enthusiasts back from Nagercoil which is about half an hour away from Kanyakumari.

I have planned the trip in such a way that most of the long distance journeys can be done overnight. Also there are a couple of riders which you need to keep in mind, the train to Kanyakumari from Rameswaram and the train to Baroda from Nagercoil are not daily trains so you would have to plan the trip accordingly.

If need be you could also get your parents to fly down to Chennai at the starting leg and fly down to Baroda / Ahmedabad via Mumbai from Trivandrum, a couple of hours away from Kanyakumari in the final leg.

If you are interested in doing this using Trains, would suggest the following.

1. Chennai - Rameshwaram - by the early evening train. It reaches Rameshwaram early morning. Spend the whole day there after having bath at 21 tanks, darshan at temple and also visit Dhanushkodi by hiring a jeep for yourself from Rameshwaram itself. You can also visit the Kondantharamasamy temple on the way.
2. Rameshwaram - Kanyakumari: Train departs twice a week at 8:45 in the night and reaches Kanyakumari next day morning 4:45. Apt for viewing the Sunrise and then spend the time visiting places around.
3 Kanyakumari - Chennai: There are 3 daily trains if you include nagercoil (distance of 15 kms from Kanyakumari) and 5 non daily trains.
You can plan based on your exact travel dates. You can also do this in the reverse direction or include Madurai also in the trip as all the three legs of the journey goes via Madurai (except Chennai - Rameshwaram where train bypass Madurai by travelling via Chettinad)

To add to Gansan's input: Deepavali is in October end, there will be heavy rush 22-30 October. The rains subside after mid-Dec, would be ideal to plan between 15 and 25 Dec before the Christmas rush starts.

Just got back from a road trip to Kanyakumari from Bangalore-677 kms from doorstep to Hotel-Maadhani-fantastic roads, great weather and happy that we did make it to Kanyakumari as part of a longish weekend trip to Kodai. Left Bangalore at 0600 hrs on 12 Aug and was there at 1530 hrs the same day. The weather was so good-overcast skies with a pleasant sea breeze. The skies cleared at sunrise and sunset the next day-lucky to watch the different shades of orange and red hues filling the skies. Maadhani-a great place to stay-room's balcony overlooked the beach, both the rocks and a front row seat for the sunrise.

Hi Arun,

Thanks for the headsup. Got very helpful tips from that thread. I've booked Hotel Sivamurugan for stay. Booked the king suite super deluxe. Any comments on this hotel?
In one day, what are the areas we can cover? Or taking local taxi/package tour is the best option? Please advise.

Boating to Vivekananda Rock/Thiruvalluvar Statue, Gandhi mandapam Vattakottai Fort, Suchindram temple, Sunrise/Sunset and some shopping. This plan will be little relaxed.

For Package tour, I think they charge around 4.5K-5K per day for a Tempo Traveller. I am not sure about the rates for cars.
