Default Best route from Nagpur - Mumbai

Hey people,

So I'm going to be travelling from Nagpur to Mumbai in a day or so, and I wanted to know the best/fastest route amongst the following:

1. Nagpur - Amravati - Karanja - Mehekar - Jalna - Aurangabad - Pune - Mumbai

2. Nagpur - Amravati - Karanja - Mehekar - Jalna - Aurangabad - Ahmednagar - NH 222 - Mumbai

3. Nagpur - Amravati - Karanja - Mehekar - Jalna - Aurangabad - Kopargaon - Sinnar - Ghoti/Igatpuri - Mumbai ............. (Did this 3 yrs ago and the Aurangabad-Mumbai stretch wasn't the best)

Also need to know whether I should do Nagpur - Aurangabad via Amrawati/Karanja or via Wardha/Pulgaon/Karanja?
I did the latter last year around this time and it was pretty smooth sailing, but I read elsewhere that the Nagpur-Amravati route might be even faster.

Would really appreciate any inputs from people who've done this route recently. Thanks.

We did the Ngp-Pune route in June as per below log:

6:37 AM 0 Nagpur OUT
7:00 AM 19 Jamtha IOC-D
7:06 AM 24 Toll
8:08 AM 55 Wardha Stop IN
9:28 AM Wardha Stop OUT, 2 Lane Good road but traffic
10:14 AM 45 Pulgaon Naka
11:11 AM 85 Karanja Bypass
11:22 AM 100 Shevti Toll
11:32 AM 112 Shelu, Bad roads, villages obstacles IN
11:35 AM 115 Bad roads, villages obstacles OUT, Good Road
11:58 AM 147 Malegaon bypass OUT
12:02 PM 151 Malegaon Toll
12:32 PM 191 Mehekar
12:40 PM 195 Sultanpur Fork to Lonar, ok road
12:47 PM 197 Sultanpur, ok road
1:07 PM 217 Lonar Lake IN
1:30 PM Lonar Lake OUT
2:23 PM 232 Roadside Dhaba, Cleaning, Tea & Bisq, OUT
2:45 PM 256 Dusrabid Toll
3:03 PM 277 Sindkhed OUT
3:23 PM 303 Jalna bypass, Aur 70, Bad Road
3:33 PM 314 Aur Road, Aur 56
3:37 PM 317 Aur Toll, 4 Lane Good Road
4:04 PM 351 Lad Toll
4:12 PM 359 Aur bypass
4:26 PM 374 IOC-D Aur bypass IN
4:31 PM IOC-D Aur bypass OUT
4:40 PM 378 Cantt
4:59 PM 394 Limbe Jalgaon Toll
5:26 PM 428 Khadkar Phata Toll
6:00 PM 473 Nagar Toll
6:22 PM 490 Ahmednagar Fly End
6:47 PM 519 Ahmednagar Toll
5:42 PM 580 Wagholi Toll
8:40 PM 610 Pune

Heard Amravati route to be smooth but also some heard sections may still not be completed and did not have first hand information, and we also had to make a stop at Wardha. So if you skip the Wardha and skip Lonar, there is a good saving of 2+ hrs. I would probably take this route to Mumbai, by joining the Expressway to Mumbai.

En route, Lonar is a worthwhile stop if this is not a regular travel route.
We had eatables at hand so did not have to stop for long en route at any dhabas on that account, also some dilly-dallying here and there otherwise the trip could be concluded earlier also.

From Nagpur to Mumbai the earlier route used to be Nagpur - Amravati - Akola - Jalgaon - Dhule - Nashik - Mumbai. But nowadays there are some patches in between after Amravati and also sometimes Dhule bypass is also jammed is what i have heard.

According to me a good route will be Nagpur - Amravati - Karanja - Mehekar - Jalna - Aurangabad - Vaijapur - Yeola - Nashik - Mumbai.

Nagpur - Wardha - Pulgaon - Karanja or Nagpur - Amravati - Karanja should not make much of a difference.

Aurangabad - Nashik is four laned in places. Nashik - Mumbai also the ghat is four laned and one way so it is safe and does not get blocked. If any kms difference is there you will make it up by saving time crossing through Pune!!

My father had done this route some time back. Then there were certain patches which were not good. Otherwise it is four laned in certain places. Should be alright now. Good luck. And inform us the latest status.

sangtani,

The route #2 you described below should be the quickest in terms of travel time plus you might save about 200 bucks on toll.

The Nagar - NH222 - Mumbai patch is very very scenic in the Malshej Ghat section. You should come across very less traffic in this patch. But, please avoid going thru this stretch between 10PM - 5AM.

NH222/Malshej is one of my favorite drives, but road conditions in Shahad/Kalyan are so terrible that I would not dare venture there. My last trip to Shahad/Kalyan was in Oct 2011. The Murbad road is non existant, and I had to drive at 15-20 km in many stretches. I dont know how it is beyond Shahad.
I did the Ghoti Sinnar route a couple of times last year, and that is much less trouble than Shahad. You will encounter lots of raod work from Sinnar onwards, unless you find by-roads that are quiet and good. I have some routes mentioned in a post on Shirdi routes.

Hi People,

I will be required to work from Wardha for next few months. The arrangement is such that 75 per cent of the time for next 3 to 5 months I will be operating from Wardha. My family will continue to live in Mumbai. I seek advice on travelling between the two places. I understand it is a 12 hour drive from Mumbai to Wardha. So driving back over weekends, how feasible is it. Flying from Nagpur is expensive. Trains? How easy is it to get reservations?

Seek your advice in planning my next few months and making the travel between Mumbai and Wardha efficient and comfortable.

Regards,
D

Driving on weekends I feel will be hectic because of the traffic encountered on both the routes ( via Igatpuri - Sinner or via Pune - Ahmednagar). Trains should be okay because almost all the trains stop at wardha. Also check out flight rates which I feel are around 2000-2500 range since there are almost 7-8 flights between Mumbai - Nagpur.

Talking Re: Best route from Nagpur - Mumbai

We drove from Mumbai to Nagpur and back last month and had a fantastic 900km trip! As usual, I’d start with the most important member of our trip - the car. We have a 2006 Baleno LXi, with no modifications except for slight differential stiffening of the shocks to reduce understeer. Did a thorough service and check of all major areas, and we were good to go.

Just to add some flavor, we took two different routes:
Mumbai-Ahmednagar-Aurangabad-Jalna-Lonar-Wardha-Nagpur (NH 222 & NH 6) while going; and
Nagpur-Amravati-Akola-Jalgaon-Dhule-Nashik-Mumbai (NH 6 & NH 4) while returning.
I’m quite against driving at night on our highways, so we comfortably split the driving distance over 4 days.

The first half of the Mumbai-Nagpur stretch was lovely, with the Malshej Ghat stretch in between. However, the road’s not great and will slow you right down especially in the ghat section, an area I for one like to use all 95-odd bhp that the car's got. Overall it’s all 2-laned but surprisingly there’s hardly any traffic. Somewhere in Ahmednagar we had a puncture that ruined the right rear tube and the tyre to some extent. Anyway, we managed to find an adept mechanic who not only replaced the tube but also fixed the hole in the tyre with an interesting silicon patch (I’d never heard of it before!). We halted overnight at Aurangabad and started off early the next day again so that we could take a detour to the Lonar crater lake. Now all the natural beauty and sightseeing made me hungry and there were hardly any large-ish places to eat between Karanja and Wardha. So I would advice stopping for lunch at Karanja itself – unless you’re fond of samosa’s for lunch (which is actually isn’t a bad deal). Mehekar onwards is a good drive even though the terrain is uninteresting and uninhabited, with barren land all around. Buti Bori to Nagpur was 4-laned and in good condition, although the traffic did build up. Our driving speed was mostly between 80 and 110 kmph, there wasn’t much of a chance to go any faster.

The Nagpur-Mumbai journey was in most aspects – different. The roads were broader and more NH like, the heavy traffic infinitely more, and the scenery more or less missing. Upto Dhule, the road alternates between being 2 and 4-laned because highway construction is still in progress. Which of course is notorious for causing traffic jams. However, the good part is that there are bypasses at Amravati, Akola, Khamgaon, etc. so you don’t have to pass through every small town like on the previous route. We stopped overnight at Jalgaon because there was so much traffic that we couldn’t have made Dhule before sunset. We visited Sula Vineyards the next day which was a good 1-hour detour and then got back on the highway to be greeted by a good 4-laned road almost all the way back. Driving speed was about 70-80kmph upto Dhule and upto 140kmph on the good stretches.

Both routes are approximately the same length and take a similar amount of time. In all, the car behaved wonderfully, although I did have some worrying vibration towards the end because of old tyres and a potentially unbalanced setup. My advice would be to carry an extra tube and spark plug, and to take route no. 1 for a better quality drive (if you’re planning a day trip).

I guess its a typo error,this route should be NH6 & NH3 and not NH4.

Also what was the time taken for your return drive(NGP-BOM)?

Sorry about that, its NH6 & NH3 like you said. The time taken for Nagpur-Mumbai was ~19.5 hours (with halts) and ~14.5 hours (without halts)

I will also be driving from Amravati to Mumbai shortly in my Swift Vxi and was going through these routes you have shared.

Last time I drove I used the route 1 mentioned by you which cuts at Karanja for Amravati. This was very scenic, but drive was in Dec 2009 so not sure what the current condition of road is. While going back from Amravati from Ahmednagar I went to Pune rather than from Malshej as it was night and wanted to avoid the stretch at night.

Now I am thinking by going the Route 2 this time and want to understand from you that how is the condition of the road and how much of it is 4 lane till now or still we have 2 lanes in there.

Also there is a new Nagpur–Aurangabad–Mumbai express highway which is built any idea on this.
The route is Nagpur - (via NH7) - Butibori - (via MSH3) - Wardha - Pulgaon - Talegaon(S) - Karanja Lad - Malegaon(Washim) - Mehkar - Sindhkhedraja -- Jalna - Aurangabad - Vaijapur - Sawantsar - Pun-tamba - Zagade - Sinnar - Ghoti - (via NH 3) - Kalyan - Mumbai.

The link on Wikepedia for this Route is Here.

Has anybody tried this route?

Regards
Abhi

For route 2, I would say the 2 lane to 4 lane ratio is about 50:50. Amravati to Akola is a 2-lane road which is not great, the road is not that narrow but speed is still capped at 100 kmph. However, you can avoid some towns like Akola and Khamgaon by using the bypasses. There is a small 4-lane stretch between Khamgaon and Nandura, and then it is mostly 2-laned till Dhule. Dhule to Nashik and Nashik to Mumbai (Nashik Mumbai expressway) is a 4-laned stretch in pretty good shape.

About the new Nagpur–Aurangabad–Mumbai express highway, I think that's the Route 1 that we took (from Aurangabad to Nagpur). The road is mostly 2-laned from Aurangabad up to Buti Bori, and passes through many villages, but probably since we did that stretch on a weekday there wasn't too much traffic. Also, heavy vehicle traffic was lesser on this route as compared to Route 2.

Amravati - Akola you have one more route which goes through Kherda thats a good road. In this case mostly I would prefer to go by the Route 2 as that route is good. Also I need to cover this in one day only.

The route 1 is the same then which I also used couple of years back and was wanting a sense from you on the current status, but it seems its still not 4 lane. God knows why they call it as an expressway.

Thanks for the update
