Exclamation October 2012 Alert - KA / TN Roadblock - Cauvery Issue

Brethren,
DO NOT follow up on your plans for an ex-Bangalore long weekend or Sunday in Mysore, Coorg, etc. Especially if you're (like me) in a TN-registered car.

The KA government has begun release of water from today. Expect widespread roadblocks and agitation. Watch this space - or the news channels if you believe what they say - for updates. Leaving you with a news report on the situation.

Karnataka begins release of Cauvery water to TN
Press Trust of India / Mandya September 30, 2012 09:45 IST
Complying with the Supreme Court directive, Karnataka today began release
of Cauvery River water to Tamil Nadu, triggering widespread protests across
the district and disrupting vehicular movement.
Irrigation authorities told PTI that about 5000 cusecs of water was being
released from Krishnarajasagar Dam and Kabini Reservoir since last night.
According to sources, Karnataka will be ensuring flow of 9000 cusecs of water
to Tamil Nadu.
The decision comes a day after an all*party meeting decided to request Prime
Minister, Manmohan Singh to review the directive of the Cauvery River
Authority (CRA, headed by him, asking Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs of
water.
The all*party meet decision was taken in the backdrop of Supreme Court on
Friday directing the state to implement the CRA order.
As the water release began, the farmers blocked the Bangalore* Mysore
highway near Gejjalagere and more than 50 people including JD (S) MLA, C
S Puttaraju have been arrested.
The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has suspended
bus services apprehending violence.
Police have stepped up tight security in various parts of the district, the epi*
centre of protests against release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
On Friday, the Supreme Court had pulled up the Karnataka Government for
failing to comply with the CRA directive to release 9,000 cusecs of water to
Tamil Nadu from September 20 to October 15 and warned that it would have
to pass appropriate orders if Karnataka did not fall in lin

My brother was driving back from Mysore to Bangalore yesterday and SH-17 was blocked in/around Mandya by protesters. All traffic was diverted to Kanakapura road, which was peaceful (as of yesterday).

Well I did run into this situation on Saturday I had to drive to Mysore with family and near Mandya got stuck in a jam for almost an hour. Reason - blocked roads by the protesters. However on the way back later in the evening the situation was under control and was able to pass by smoothly.

For those who HAVE to travel to Mysore for whatever reasons, the best time to do so in the current situation seems to be early mornings or late nights.

My relative had to be in Mysore for an operation today, so they left Bangalore at 3 30 am last night and reached Mysore around 6 am. They weren't stopped by anyone enroute.
They plan to return late night on Wednesday or Thursday depending on the situation. Will update the thread then.

This may also be useful for all the TN registered cars.

Dear friends,
I'm on the return leg of a journey to north India and am currently holed up in Osmanabad for the night. My original plan was to go on to Kolhapur, Sawantwadi, Goa, Mangalore, Kozhikode and reach Erode. Now I'm having second thoughts due to the Cauvery issue.
Can anyone tell me if there is still unrest and hence unsafe to make the journey? Would it be wiser for me to go via Hyderabad, Anantpur, Madanapalle, Kuppam, Krishnagiri and then Erode?
I'm travelling in a TN registered innova with my senior citizen parents and have been doing 500 to 600 Kms a day on an average. I know it is a very short notice but my wife has become quite concerned. So I've told her I'd consult the knowledgable chaps on this forum.

Don't worry about Cauvery issue and plan your trip. There has been good rains in Cauvery basis and enough water has flowed to Mettur dam. There will not be any cause for concern.

Thanks a lot, Fauji-ji. Unfortunately the iPad net connection konked off today before I set out, so I could not check on the responses. I ended up asking a few TN registered truckers on the way, and they said they had passed through chitradurga, hospet, Bijapur and did not have any problem. So straight from the horses' mouth, I guess.
