Default Driving destinations in Mumbai

Well guys, my six month old swift is nearing 4k kms now (of which 1.2 k approx were ‘chauffeur driven’). This included a trip to kashid (230 kms bothways), three trips to Mumbai Central Stn from navi Mumbai (220 Kms) , and rest being driving within navi Mumbai.

Now I am looking forward to driving in Mumbai. (Mumbai) guys Pls chip in with your suggestions on driving destinations in Mumbai. Also a rough route plan and suggestion on parking spaces available is welcome.

Thanks in advance,

vivek

Vivek, what kind of driving destinations are you looking for--great places to eat, places of historical importance.....???

Here's one destination you may like. If you've never been to South Bombay/Fort on a Sunday, go there to check out just how quiet it is and how you can really appreciate the architecture of the old buildings in Fort, Kala Ghoda, Ballard Estate, etc. You'll discover synagogues, great little restaurants, and so much more.

There's enough and more of parking in this area on a Sunday. The route plan should be--New Bombay > Chembur > Sion > Dadar > Parel > Byculla > JJ Flyover > VT > Kala Ghoda.

Once there, park your car and hit the road using your two feet. You might get some route maps for a heritage walk on some Bombay-related sites too. After some looking around (in case you're not interested in walking, the Museum, the Gateway of India, the NGMA and Jahangir Art Gallery can keep you occupied for some time, and Rhythm House if you like good music), you can always catch a movie at Regal (a heritage building) and a beer at Mondegars (next door to Regal) or some awesome Goan food at Martins (down the road, Opp Strand Cinema, Colaba) or some yummy Continental food at Churchill (on Colaba Causeway).

And while you are Kala Ghoda, look out for the sad, drab building just opposite the parking island (the footpath under the building has iron pillars coming down from the building. It's a horrible building now and looks like it deserves to be demolished. But once it was the Watson Hotel and it's actually a World Heritage structure because the entire structure has a cast iron frame--seems a handful of such buildings survive in the world and it was super expensive when it was built. It seems Jamshetji Tata built the Taj because Indians were not allowed into this white men-only hotel. That'll give you an idea of how much we value our past and the world heritage structures that we have.

Hey,
Firstly, the route from Navi Mumbai :

Secondly, I'd suggest you to stay at the Prakruti Resorts which is just 5 mins from the lovely white sand Kashid Beach. Its an excellent place to stay at,with great food.

The drivetime to Kashid is around 3-4 hrs at an average of 100kmph. The scenery once you cross Alibaug is just mesmerizing. You driving with the mountains on your left and the sea to your right. Its an awesome stretch.
Its overall a very very memorable experience.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip.

Bandra Reclamation and Carter Road in Bandra are two other places where you can spend some quality driving time!

Grab an issue of TimeOut, Mumbai. That should give you enough places to go to, either by car or otherwise.
