Nitin, I don't think Gonikkuppa - Kutta road will be good. Any information about our Mysore - Mananthawadi road? It supposed to be open by May'09

By Mysore - Mananthawady road, do you mean the road that passes through HD Kote and JLR Kabini ? If so, I did'nt even know that is was closed !

Hi Kannan, True it was never closed, but earlier there was some restriction during night time. But presently the road repair is going on (or complete ? ) after some legal battles. Any one is having the current update on this road?

Folks,
Came back from my Northern Kerala trip. Went to Thalassery via S. Battery --- Thamarassey -- Balussery -- Koyilandi -- Badagara--- Temple gate (Thalassery). Total distance was 387 KM and I took 7.5 hrs to reach which includes half an hour break. The road condition, as expected, is super! This is FYI

Hi All

Came back today from Kannur. Please find below the info regarding the 3 roads other than Gundalpet ~ S Bathery ~ Mananthavady route.

1. Mysore ~ HD Kote ~ Bavely ~ Mananthavady - The road is ristricted (open 6 AM to 6 PM). The road is bad and repair left halfway in the HD Kote ~ Bavely stretch.
2. Mysore ~ Hunsur ~ Nagarahole ~ Kutta ~ Mananthavady - The road is ristricted (open 6 AM to 6 PM). This is the shortest of all possible routes after the closure of Perumpady ~ Kootupuzha road. The road is very good except for 4 Kms from Kutta to Tolpatty.
3. Mysore ~ Hunsur ~ Gonikoppa ~ Ponampete ~ Srimangala ~ Kutta ~ Mananthavady -

Total Distance - 366 Kms (Kannur GPO- Bangalore GPO)

Road Condition -

Excellent (Bangalore to Hunsur)
Good but single (Hunsur to Gonikoppa)
Good but single (Gonikoppa to Ponampete)
Fair but uneven, without potholes (Ponampete to Srimangala)
Good but single (Srimangala to Kutta)
Bad 4 Kms (Kutta to Tolpatty)
Good (Tolpatty to Kartikulam)
Very Good (Kartitulam to Mananthavady)
Good (Mananthavady to Peravoor via Kottiyoor)
Excellent (Peravoor to Iritty)
Good (Iritty to Mattanur)
Excelllent (Mattanur to Kannur via Chalode)

Took the 3rd route while retuning back. Started from Kannur at 5 pm and was in Bangalore at 1 am with 3 stops (took 1.5 hrs, had to visit 2 friends place on the way + dinner at Kartikulam) So Did the 366 Kms in 6.5 Hrs with heavy rain till kartikulam.

I would recommend this route as it is 50 Kms lesser than the distance compared to the gundalpet ~ S Bathery route. Also this route is open 24 Hrs as it does not enter Nagarhole National Park.

The road from Mysore to Gundlupet is quite good although there are a few unmarked speedbreakers along the way especially on the Mysore Nanjangud stretch.

The road is in good condition and at two places need to take deviation as the small bridge construction work is going on. Also they have completed the tarring the entire stretch from Gundalpet till Kerala boarder. I had a smooth ride back and forth :-)

Karnataka Forest Dept. planning to close Gundalpet~Muthanga Road in the night (6PM to 6AM)

So the restricted roads towards Malabar (Kasargod, Kannur & Calicut)
1. Hunsur ~ Kutta
2. H D Kote ~ Kutta
3. Gundelpet~Muthanga

It looks like all the animals might have given a mass petition to Karanatak gov. Jokes apart, if this news is correct, how the pvt buses ply between Bangalore and North Kerala?

Will be the only route possible from 6PM to 6AM.
As the condition of this road is bad for ~5Kms and Narrow for ~30 Km, It will be hell as all the bus and the trucks will take this route.

So we don't have a proper road to North Kerala for at least 6 months (provided the Perumpady~Makuta road is opened in Dec 09 as promised)

Man this is bad news for all who plan to visit north kerala for weekends.
