Drove Bangalore-Pandalam yesterday via Salem, CBE, Thrissur, Cochin, Aleppy, Changanassery, pandalam.

You have to be smart while crossing valayar, we may be in a queue which mayn't be an actual one. Just got a gap and tried come forward, realized that the big queue was behind an idle truck

It was drizzling and no police men, people driving to find out there own ways :(
Truckers just parks wherever they like.

Compared to last time (4 months back), drive from valayar to aleppy was good without any potholes (except a small strech near kuthiran).

Aleppy to Changanassery road in excellent shape. MC road looks good enough with patch work done.

It was raining 60% time. Started from JP Nagar at 5 30 PM and reached pandalam by 8AM. 3 breaks , one at McDonalds after Hosur for kids (30 minutes), Salem(dinner near one bakery, wify prapared chappthy-curry 30 minutes).
5 AM - 5 30 - Stopped at vyttila and took a nap.

Enjoyed the driving, love my Baleno trustable always..

I wanted to do a road trip from Bangalore - Mysore - Waynad - Cochin.

I heard the road from Waynad to Cochin is in bad condition?

Do you have any suggestions on the above route?

Two options. One via Calicut and the other via Nilambur.

Kalpetta-Meppadi-Nilambur-Pattambi-Shornur-Trichur-Cochin

I dont know how good is the option via Calicut from a traffic point of view. But at least you get 4-lane from Trichur.

I drove Kalpetta to Angamaly last weekend through the route Kalpetta-Vythiri-Thamarassery-Mukkam-Areekode-Manjeri-Thirurkad-Perinthalmanna-Pulamanthole-Pattambi-Kulapulli-Wadakanchery-Thrissur-Angamaly.
There are some bad patches in between Tamarassery/Mukkam and Pulamanthole/Pattambi stretches where the road works are going on. I remember it's only for maximum 5 kms. Rest of the roads are really good. But expect heavy(Typical Kerala) traffic and delays in towns like Manjeri/Areecode/Wadakanchery during daytime. It took me around 6 hours with 30-45 mins break.
You can take the route Kalpetta-Thamarassery-Kozhikode Bypass-Changuvetti-Kuttipuram-Edappal-Kunnamkulam-Thrissur also. But the traffic will be on higher side between Kozhikode and Thrissur irrespective of day/night time.

Hi,

Did a trip recently to Karapuzha Dam area from Bangalore on Jan 12- 14 weekend. The route taken was
Bangalore - Mysore - Nanjangud - Gundlupet - Sultan Bathery - Karapuzha.

The roads are pretty decent enough. Just be careful when you pass through Bandipur forest. There are small trenches made on the road ( for rainwater runoff) which are not marked and can be tricky at times. The highway after mysore reduces to double lane highway with no median. Negotiating this route at night with high beamers is not recommended.

When you enter mysore use the ring road to bypass the city.

Folks, this summer I will have to do Bangalore-Kochi (rather, Bangalore-Perumbavur, the latter being the town at the MC Road/SH 16 junction) twice - once, solo and one-way in a Zen Estillo and the second time, with family for a return trip in my Civic. I generally prefer early morning departures from Bangalore - 4AM-ish. I would like the latest road status (I understand all of KA and TN are four lane, dual carriageway if I opt to go via the NH7/NH47 route) and other gotchas to watch out for.

- What is the delay I should expect at Valayar checkpost?
- Is it worthwhile considering coming via Dindigul/Munnar?
- Is Palakkad-Thrissur on NH47 worth risking (the Civic is very sensitive)?
- Any other advice?

This is my first trip to mid/south Kerala - though I am generally a veteran of the BOM-BLR-MAA-HYD circuit.

1. Usually, no traffic block at that time at Walayar.
2. Dindigul/Munnar route is very scenic, but much time consuming.
3. Palakkad-Thrissur should be ok for a day drive. Watch for latest updates. Alternately, you can try Shornur route for smooth surface with relatively higher traffic.
4. Check for Tiruppur-Pollachi route as well, if you are very particular about road surface.

Watch following thread as well for updates:

Another alternative, though its strictly not an alternative:

Perundurai-Kangeyam-Palladam-Pollachi-Valparai-Chalakudy-Angamanly-Ernakulam.

Its kind of some where in between Munnar option and the one via Trichur.

Pollachi-Aliyar is fast. Aliayar-Valparai-Chalakudy should be about 2 hours max. You get good scenic roads (though they are narrow, but you hardly see any traffic) and also bypass the bad route regions.

BLR-Dindigul-Kodai Road-Theni: 6hrs

Theni-Poopara-Rajakkad-Adimali-Perumbavur:3.5-4hrs(not sure of present road condns between Adimali and Poopara).

Roads are good.

NH7-NH47 combo, below should be your timings, but very unpredictable road conditions and unpredictable traffic conditions.I would completely avoid the NH47 in Kerala till Thrissur.

BLR-Salem: 3hrs

Salem-CBE 3-3.5HRS

CBE-PALAKKAD:1.5HR-2HR

PALAKKAD-TCR:2-2.5HRS

TCR-ANGAMALY:1HR

ANGAMALY-PERUMBAVUR-1HR

I think Bangalore-Perumbavoor through NH47 should take about 9-10 hours without exceeding 100kmph.

Scenic road, less traffic - yes but can't be done in 2 hours
It took me close to 3.5 Hrs for Athirapilly-Valparai itself, I think other members reported similar times as well on some other thread (about 10 Km or so stretch was not great so it slows you down). Also note that Valparai-Chalakudy route has a forest checkpost after Sholayar Dam at Malakkappara and you will need to check on the timings when traffic is allowed (maybe 6pm).There are 2 other forest checkposts at Vazhachal and Athirapilly before you reach Chalakudy.

Thanks NPV for correcting me. Somehow that 2 hours stuff kind of stuck on to me! Yes it would take about 3-4 hours.
Reaching Valparai from Pollachi is quite quick. Its after Valparai town beyond Sholayar, where I think the problems start.

Here, "that time" means the time when I reach Walayar if I start from Bangalore at 4AM, right?

The more I read about Palakkad-Thrissur NH47, the more it scares me. I think I will do the NH circuit all the way except this stretch, instead go via Shornur.
Let me go back in this thread a bit more to see the actual routing of Palakkad-Shornur-Thrissur.

Yep, seems like this Kuthiran is a major problem. Thanks for the heads-up.
